What does a 45,000-year-old femur mean for the Neanderthal in you?
The Christian Science Monitor's Science Blog ^ | October 23, 2014 | Anne Steele

A genetic analysis of a 45,000-year-old thigh bone narrows down the time when modern humans and Neanderthals first interbred.

A 45,000-year-old leg bone is raising questions about just how close modern-day humans are to our thick-browed Stone Age ancestors.

DNA from the femur of a Siberian man is helping to pinpoint when modern humans and Neanderthals first interbred, researchers say. But what does this mean for the human connection to a species that disappeared nearly 30,000 years ago?

The thigh bone, spotted six years ago on the banks of the Irtysh River in Siberia by a Russian artist who carves jewelry from ancient mammoth tusks, has revealed the oldest Homo sapiens genome sequence on record, according the journal Nature....

In another thread I saw where Africans have a higher percentage of Neanderthal blood/genes than the other races. I thought maybe it would be the White man because the Neanderthal seemed to be found in Europe.

Anyone know anything about genetic testing?

I’m tempted to get a National Geographic geographic test… As a female, I understand that all I can find out is female lineage. I might pay for my male cousin’s too to see where the male side of my family came from. (our grandfathers were brothers.)

Asians have the most Neanderthal DNA, followed by Europeans. Sub Saharan Africans have none.

Is 45,000 years a bit of a stretch for radio carbon dating or not? The half life of C14 is 5730 years, so we are talking only a 231st of the normal amount of C14 to measure.

The Neandertal Enigma
by James Shreeve

in local libraries
"Frayer's own reading of the record reveals a number of overlooked traits that clearly and specifically link the Neandertals to the Cro-Magnons. One such trait is the shape of the opening of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, a spot where dentists often give a pain-blocking injection. In many Neandertal, the upper portion of the opening is covered by a broad bony ridge, a curious feature also carried by a significant number of Cro-Magnons. But none of the alleged 'ancestors of us all' fossils from Africa have it, and it is extremely rare in modern people outside Europe." [pp 126-127]

The theoretical limit used to be 60,000 years (based on the sensitivity of the equipment then available); the practical limit is 50,000, used to be less, and 45,000 is not a bit of a stretch.

Really? Man, that's counter-intuitive.

Yes. You have your mother's mtDNA and your father's yDNA, you will pass on your and your mother's mtDNA to your daughters...you will not pass on your fathers DNA. Your brothers will pass on his DNA but not their mothers DNA..

Many of us here at FR had our DNA checked almost a decade ago and our DNA data was included in the National Geographic TV special titled "The Journey Of Mankind." Click on the link below to see:

This is 100% correct.

Additionally, The Tibetians, Australian Aborigines and Melinesian Islanders are the ones who have the Denisovan DNA.

It is not well understood yet but the Tibetians inherited some high-altitude features from the Denisovans.
