CDC Won’t Halt Flights Because It Might Harm Fledgling Economies

The CDC doesn't seem especially willing to contend with the subject of Ebola virus transportation via air travel. Not to a nurse calling the CDC with potential symptoms of Ebola requesting to take a weekend getaway to Ohio, and most likely to Congress in today's emergency Congressional Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing on the Ebola outbreak, featuring CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden, NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci, and other directors from the HHS, DHS and FDA. Although Rep. Tim Murphy is reportedly going to try.

Yesterday, the White House reiterated that a ban on flights originating in outbreak countries is not on the table, so Patient Zero could be in a boarding lounge as we speak (errrr....write), and while they haven't given much rationale for their unwillingness to cut off the booming market for tourism to West Africa, it turns out most of their rationale actually is the booming market for tourism to West Africa.

Murphy, though, said he talked with Frieden about a ban. “And he explained to me that what the concern was that these are fledgling democracies and if we put a travel ban that that may affect their economy and harm them,” the congressman said.

“And I see it as, look, we can still move planes in and out there with supplies. We can do a lot. And we can help in every other way with economics. We can provide a lot of support to these nations. And the United States is doing it both to government and nongovernment organizations. A massive amount of charity is going to help these people as we should. But I just don’t understand the concept of if we stop flights in travel that would be a problem. I think we need to do that

I don’t think the African Hot Zone has too many “fledgling economies”. They seem to be mostly moribund economies.

Shut down the borders, to people from the most infected countries.

Right now.

- Obama won't protect Americans from Ebola because "his affinities" are with Africa, not the U.S. "He's their leader."

Why would an airline, as a profit seeking operation (or even one that wants to stay in business) send its planes into Ebola hotspots to pick up passengers?

Hello? Do they want to stay in business?

The free market could easily and should take care of this situation.

Goebbels refined the Big Lie technique. It seems that some in our government are intent to improve on that and introduce the Barrage Lie technique. Tell enough lies and some are bound to stick.

That should tell you what the federal government thinks of the little people it rules.

Here’s the deal.....because the news media just aren’t bright enough to figure this out. A number of Africans, especially from Nigeria, but from the other ones to a lesser degree....have bought and paid off the right political characters and gotten visas for themselves and the extended families. So they have set up expensive houses in various southern communities and have the family safely set up. No chance of kidnapping or the typical things you’d run into in Africa. The family members fly back and forth....attending to their business operations there, but enjoy the safety and security of the US. The political folks.....from both parties...enjoy the political donations and ensure that the whole game is played out with no hassle. This is why you don’t really hear much from DC about banning travel. The Republicans might say something but you won’t see a vote carried on this in the House, and I doubt if the Senate....even in January with the majority going that way....will allow this to come up.

On another topic....go back to 1917 and review travel restrictions with the flu. You basically find NO restrictions on the east coast, and only about twelve months into this.....do you find western rural communities which set up roadblocks and asked questions of everyone entering into a county or local city. If you look at flu numbers.....a lot less deaths in the western area of the US. No historian ever picks up this statistic or chats why the heavy eastern death score was the way it was.

It’s amazing that countries like St. Lucia and the Philippines have no problem instituting a travel ban and we won’t. Look at Belize and how they responded the minute they found out about the Texas nurse on the cruise ship who was showing Ebola symptoms. They stopped that boat from going into port and are restricting the entire group of passengers and crew from entering their country. We are the greatest nation on earth and we are being led by stupid, politically correct, inept and bought off idiots. Our entire political class has led us to disaster and this, I fear, is only the beginning.

I can only hope that enough low-information voters see the light between now and election day. One problems is that so many are too busy watching Honey Boo Boo and Bridzillas to know what's going on in the world.

The point isn't just about the economies of those nations, it's about their ability to fight and contain the outbreak being dependent upon their economic state. CDC reasoning for not endorsing a travel ban seems to be: Our focus needs to stay on finding the method for containment that is fastest, most effective, has the lowest infection and fatality rates, and also is the most efficient. Economic impact is not a high priority until it changes our ability to contain the outbreak.

Not quarantining countries and communities until the threat has passed is the most devasting thing you can do to those countries.

If you don’t believe that government has a handle on it and it’s safe to do business with these countries, then you don’t.

If you don’t believe that you will be protected from sitting next to someone with ebola on a flight, then you don’t fly.

If you believe going to the hospital will expose you to Ebola, then you don’t go.

When Obama and the CDC are done screwing this up and thousands of Americans have died, I hope that they all end up in jail!
