D.C. police chief seeks changes to concealed-carry law

People who carry concealed handguns near public events and demonstrations in the nation’s capital shouldn’t have to be personally warned by a police officer before they are subject to arrest, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Thursday.

Lanier testified at a hearing on the D.C. Council’s proposal to allow residents and visitors to get concealed handgun permits for the first time in nearly 40 years. The bill was drafted in response to a judge’s ruling this summer that struck down the District of Columbia’s ban on carrying guns outside the home.

The bill would ban the carrying of handguns within 1,000 feet of a public event, demonstration or dignitary under police protection. Lanier said those restrictions are vital because the nation’s capital is a target for terrorists and lone gunmen who would seek to harm the president or other officials.

Translation: The elites are much more important than the constitution.

Trying to make sure your new law gets shot down just like the old one, Ms. Lanier?

Where in DC would ever be more than 1000 feet from a "dignitary under police protection"?

This is not a law, it is a bill of attainder.

Here's a thought for you, genius: The folks that would do them harm tend to not check with local law enforcement prior to committing their criminal acts. And, IIRC, no President has ever been assassinated in the White House.

Best chief of police since the 4 foot 10 inch woman chief of police at UMass — chosen after a “world-wide search.”

How good are you with a concealable handgun at 1000 feet?

I would need a ‘standard sized’ magazine to walk them in.

IOW, half the places likely to be crowded with malcontents from whom you may need to protect yourself.

So you are legally carrying your gun, and unknown to you a protest is going on two blocks away. This JBT wants to be able to arrest you without warning. No doubt your “crime” will make you ineligible to own guns in the future too.
