FULL TITLE: Ohio televangelist ‘forced members to have vasectomies and abortions, told women to treat pregnancies as tumors and allowed children to be sexually abused’

Televangelist Ernest Angley has been accused of running an Ohio church where men are forced to get vasectomies and women abortions, and where children were sexually abused.

Self-proclaimed prophet Angley has been described by some of 21 former members as a closeted-homosexual Jim Jones who's turned a blind eye to sexual abuse.

But the 93-year-old has defended the allegations, saying he is simply an instrument of God.

He told the Akron Beacon Journal: 'I'm not a homosexual. God wouldn't use a homosexual like he uses me. He calls me his prophet, and indeed I am,'

Angley it is said to have played an active role in encouraging male followers to undergo vasectomies, and also monitored the results.

I’m from Cleveland and sometimes caught this fraud on the tube while channel surfing. I was always intrigued by his method of extracting dough from the “sheep” in hid flock. He’d call out to them that God wanted to see “a SEA OF GREEN” and they’d oblige by digging down and waving bills in the air.

I’m guessing the bulk of them became obozo voters.

monitored the results?

shouldn’t the result of a vasectomy be pretty obvious?

Hardly.

Scripture would have him stoned outside the camp.

“Self-proclaimed prophet...”

That’s usually not a good sign.

“He told the Akron Beacon Journal: ‘I’m not a homosexual. God wouldn’t use a homosexual like he uses me. He calls me his prophet, and indeed I am,’”

Ok, if you are, then prove it. Raise the dead. Won’t be holding my breath.

“Another self proclaimed “prophet” - another argument against Sola Scriptura.”

That really makes no sense at all. Proclaiming yourself a “prophet” is an explicit rejection of the doctrine of Sola Scriptura.

I do not remember why but this guy did not seem like the kind of person I would want in my neighborhood. There are very few “preachers” on tv I trusted.

I think you Catholics have enough problems without throwing stones at anyone else. He seemed fake from the first time I saw him.

We still refer to it as “Rex’s Erection”. He ran out of money to finish it off with the planned rotating restaurant and broadcast tower at the top. And since the thing is a rebar reinforced concrete tube, 500 feet tall, and surrounded by residential housing it can’t be safely demolished.

I don’t think they are “real” Shakers. The Shaker “Council” made a decision not to except any new members long ago, and the last pre-decision member died in the 1980s, iirc.

I say “pre-” because they apparently still took in the odd lost soul now and then, but not for membership.

It seems to me the Protestants/Evangelicals have jurisdiction in this case. Angley is a native of Gaston County, North Carolina; in his early life he was raised a Baptist, and at the age of 18 he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.[1] In the early 1950s, traveling with their tent and camper, he and his wife arrived in Northeast Ohio as a traveling "salvation and healing" Pentecostal evangelist.

No this joker is NOT dead yet, and you know...

I have lived ALL MY LIFE with the names like Angely, Pelosi, Reid, McCain, McConnell, Graham, etc etc etc... and I am getting pretty damn sick of all of them.

I can[t believe the younger generation has not stood up yet and said “Hey - why should we listen to you ass holes- you screwed up everything so far and spent $trillions of MY MONEY doing it.”

I can’t believe they even GET people to fall for the the “government helps people” crap any more.

I do know that Rex Humbard was considered Elvis Presley’s minister. I think he even preached his funeral.

I have jurisdiction in this case,

1. I am an ex protestant. but more importantly

2. I am one of those who post all stuff Prolife/anti Abortion related.

I don’t care who the hell you are, if you are pushing Abortion I will be on your case! Do I make myself clear?

That I did not know. My brother went to high school with Rex Jr. Typical preacher’s son, a little on the wild side. Maybe it gives some people hope but in my humble opinion money machine televangelism, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker being the most ludicrous example - PTL may as well have stood for “Pass The Loot” - has probably led more people to close their ears to the genuine Christian message than almost anything else you can think of.

Yes, Sister. Please don't rap my knuckles again. Please.

I'm grateful he is not Catholic so I don't have to read that if he were only allowed to marry ..., but obviously celibacy vs. marriage is not the problem; sin and apostasy are the problems. I don't think the Catholic Church disciplines Protestant evangelists in the normal course of events. You could bypass the bishop and go directly to the Lord asking for divine judgment on the Reverend Angley. I'm not sure what judgment I would ask; it is a very serious sin unto death of which he has been accused.
