The Houthis, Iranian backed rebels have taken control of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
The comparison to Hezbollah is apt as Reuters is reporting that the Houthi are blocking the appointment of Yemen’s president.
So what’s Iran’s interest in Yemen? It was spelled out by Michael Segall of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs two and a half years ago. A couple of Segall’s observations are sobering:
"Iran regards Yemen in general, and its Shia northern part in particular, as a springboard for subversion and for creating a tangible threat to Saudi Arabia, its main religious-political rival in the region. Iran also seeks to establish a physical Iranian presence, ground and naval, in the countries and ports of the Red Sea littoral, which control the shipping (and weapon-supply) lanes leading from the Persian Gulf to the heart of the Middle East and to Europe.
Islamic Iran aspires to superpower status. It is actively involved in the region’s primary crisis centers. These include the “Arab Spring’s” main fronts with the West and the moderate Arab states: Syria, where Iran backs Bashar Assad through thick and thin; Bahrain, where Iran calls for the overthrow of the Royal House and supports the Shia demonstrators; and Yemen, where Iran is active in attempts to create a new order that is not based on support for the West."

I was thinking earlier, between the ebola and ISIS stories, Putin could take the Ukraine and it wouldn’t even make the radar. So it was Iran taking Yemen instead.

Maybe we can just let the danged Saudis and Iranians murder each other by the millions, and get out of the way.
A co-worker has a friend who is Saudi, but in this country on a Visa. His Visa is about to expire, and he is supposed to travel to Saudi to renew it...
He is scared to do so, because he believes he will be activated into the Saudi national guard.
Why?
Apparently the ‘word on the street’ in Saudi is that all hell is about to break open - and they keep pointing to Yemen as an example of what might happen.
There has been fighting in Yemen most of my life. Often proxy wars between the Saudis and other Arabs.
And the house of Saud thought that they could keep the beast at bay by giving it money. Oops.
If he overstays his visa, you are going to report him, right?
Isn’t Yemen a bigger s**thole than Afghanistan and Iraq combined?

Just taking care of his friends....
He doesn’t want to go...but he will. Decent people are afraid of being a fugitive....and frankly, if he gets deported to Saudi, and if they determine he has shirked his guard duty - well that’s probably not good at all.
So he’ll go. I just find his insight interesting - that the era of royal family rule could go down in flames to an Arab Spring/ISIS/Popular Uprising/Iranian inspired movement.
Talked to a guy from there. He said it’s “stuck in the 70’s”.
Time the Saudis fought for themselves instead of calling in Uncle Sam every time their chestnuts are in the fire.
I imagine the royal family is doing what it always does...passing out money in the street.

The House of Saud will be passing out money on the streets of Geneva, where they go to hide out when things get ugly on the streets of Riyadh.
