I saw this black Canadian hockey player interviewed on tv once and the guy kept asking him things like: how does it feel to be an African-American hockey player, etc. And the poor interviewee kept saying: I’m a CANADIAN! Back in the 1990s they came out with a Star Trek spin off series called Voyager and cast a black actor to play a Vulcan. That is a space alien from the planet Vulcan for any non-Trekies out there.
The press repeatedly referred to him as "the first African-American Vulcan." Not the first African-American actor to play a Vulcan (which he actually wasn't), but "the first African-American Vulcan."
The character wasn't African. He wasn't American. He was a Vulcan.
