The host of the popular BBC television program "Top Gear" and other members of the crew have fled Argentina after being pelted with rocks by people who believed one of their cars had a license plate alluding to the Falklands War.

Officials said a crowd of about 50 people began hurling rocks at the BBC group Thursday as they drove in a caravan under police escort to the Chilean border with Argentina's southernmost province of Tierra del Fuego.

Host Jeremy Clarkson and the others were forced to abandon the cars in an area between Tolhuin and Rio Grande. One minor injury was reported and images by local newspapers showed broken windows and other damage to the cars, which were taken into police custody.

I’m not cutting the locals slack - I would probably roll my eyes at a similar provocation, not throw rocks. But I think needlessly trolling people in the home port of the Belgrano is a dick move. In fact it was intended to be a dick move - just like they were trying to be dicks when they put NASCAR SUCKS on the car they drove through Alabama.

If it were a vanity plate wouldn’t you just say Falklands? or Argentina sucks? If you want to insult? .. even 1982 FKL ?..but does that even rise to an insult? .. the plate was H982 FKL.. hardly that provocative.

Gee do good old boy in the south stone Yankees for driving Lincoln’s in Dixie?

They did something like that in a US special. Driving in the deep South with cars painted with slogans designed to rile up the local population. It worked.

Why yes, yes we do.

Just the other day, that guy that insists he drove Lincolns long before he was paid to drive them, drove through town and tried to fake a Texas accent, but we saw through it and I got him right on the top of his head with a rock.

Didn't hurt him, though, 'cause of all the grease he had in his hair.

Rock just slid right off.

Damn yankees always trying something new.

We know better...you can't fool us good ol' boys.

Perhaps Top Gear deserved to be sued by Elon Musk / Tesla.

I was giving Top Gear the benefit of the doubt, but that doubt has been eroded.

The gas station manager or owner was not a southerner, not a southern accent. She was calling it a “hick town” herself. The whole thing was staged, imho.

Once again poor James May and Richard Hammond are left in the dust of Clarkson’s raging ego. Then again, Clarkson did rise to semi-hero status in my opinion when he busted a move on Piers Morgan several years back at the time when Piers was actually somebody as editor of the Daily Mirror. Given my druthers, I’d much rather be in Clarkson’s presence than Morgan’s but that is probably the majority view here in FReeper land!

And it can happen in the First World too. There are lots of things some foreign tv producer could do to provoke an angry response from Americans - you could put a bumper sticker on your car praising Bin Laden, or maybe a bumper sticker praising General Sherman while you drive through Georgia. I'm sure if you try hard enough you can provoke a mob to throw crap at you. It's childish and stupid, but if your only goal is higher ratings, why not.

Top Gear did pretty much that on one of their US roadtrips...Miami to New Orleans...

They failed.

As I recall the episode they succeeded to a degree that they had to flee a gas station when irate locals became very threatening. I don't recall offhand whether objects were thrown.

The 982 part is also close to “928” which is the model Porsche concerned. That would have been my first association.
