My son's school is taking a trip to New York in May. All students are invited to attend.
I asked the counselor if there were any grants available for students who were part of families who couldn't swing it and was told there were no grants available for this trip, unfortunately...so I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions for contacts who would want to encourage a student who is such a gifted student. The boy is in Advanced placement classes (since the 4th grade), he is on the A/B honor roll. He has medical issues such as JRA(since 3 years old), Lymes disease(since 11 years old) and Fibromyalgia(just recently diagnosed). Would anyone know of any organizations who offer assistance to send students to such things as this? Or maybe some government official who would have contacts? I would love for him to have this opportunity, but he also understands that I can't send him...so if no other way can be found, he knows there is just no way to do it. More information about the trip follows...
**This trip is on a three year rotation so this will be the ONLY opportunity these students have during their time at this school for this experience.

We went to the Kellogg factory in Battle Creek.
I’m not a fan of school trips that are across country esp to large cities. I don’t see the need.
My kids are none the worse for not seeing Wicked in NY. (we took them in our local city)
btw, we went to Cedar Point!

We used to go to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield village.
Are parents going too?
I grew up in NYC and it truly is a great city (be careful but it’s great.)
Maybe you should try “go fund me” or one of the other websites were people ask for donations.

Had the same thing for one of my ‘gifted’ sons for a DC trip. He raised the down payment by going to relatives and neighbors and mowed their lawns. Unfortunately, the trip didn’t pan out for various reasons.
Quite frankly, we found it cheaper if we took him ourselves. The price was outrageous.
haha My dad dragged us there as well! Don’t remember a thing other than seeing my first rat!
That’s where I went for my 8th grade field trip :)
I still enjoy going to Greenfield village. I love history.
Oh, and BTW, check out the hotel where they may be staying. I found out that our trip was going to stay in ‘choice digs’. For the teachers, of course. They accept nothing but the best. No ‘youth hostel’ for them. No sir. And we were going to fork over.
We went to the New York World’s Fair and to Washington D.C. We took a train to Washington D.C. then to New York by bus. We traveled from Florida. This was 1965.
Our class sold magazine subscriptions and nearly paid for the whole amount. There was just a little left we had to pay.
In your situation, I think I would personally take him on a vacation. Just too many obstacles to go with a group.
Turns out one guy actually did wear a speedo, and got away with it.
It was the fat gay teacher who was in charge of the trip.
How much does the school charge each child for the trip?

The travel these kids do is ridiculous. That’s what books are for. Let them get a job and take a trip. In the meantime....look at the travel books....plenty of pictures and a hell of a lot more information.
I agree. Most kids would be as happy to just go to a hotel with a pool that has a slide. I know parents get all crazy and worried that their kid is going to miss out but literally 2 days after kids get back they forget everything other than if the talked to a cute girl/guy. Maybe look for 1-2 day trips/adventures for your child with you along.
Our class trip was memorable and I am very glad we went.
There are some other things to consider tho. We were exhausted by the trip. While we were on the train I saw many of my classmates sleeping with their eyes open. I have never seen that since or before. It is an odd sight seeing a person clearly asleep and eyes open.
The World’s Fair was clean, happy, and prices were reasonable for food drinks etc.
New York itself was dirty, full of pimps and prices were really high. Our hometown New York Life agent arranged for us to visit their skyscraper and it was a pleasant visit with a great view.
As we got ready to go home it became clear that we were already homesick. While we were at Grand Central Station, two of our girls began singing “500 miles” and soon the whole class was singing and we were more like 900 miles away from home.
We got to within 20 miles of home and the train’s engine went out. Fortunately they were able to pull one off a freight which soon came by.
A great trip but just as great to be back in good ole DeFuniak Springs. We were young and healthy so we took the trip just fine but it was not an easy jaunt.
How much are they charging for the trip? The freeper above who recommended the “go fund me” site is is right on target. That way people can donate as as much or as little as they can and you can spread the donations donations net wide.
Took my kids to the beach almost every day to play on the swings etc. Even took the play pen to the seashore when they were tots.
Local Miniature golf, aquariums, museums. Plenty of things to see. But that's really the joy of parenting...spending a little time together. There is no "joy" in these school trips.
