The man with the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S. went to hospital feeling sick only to be given antibiotics and be sent home.

It was not until two days later that the man was admitted to the Dallas hospital and put in isolation, it has been reported.

It raises the frightening prospect that he was mixing freely with other people for a full two days while showing symptoms of the virus - the time when Ebola is most contagious.

The unidentified patient has been in isolation

I wash my hands often, too. I have hand lotion in almost every room to keep my hands from drying out.

I read another article about how the Liberian community was concerned about it spreading into their community.
It appears to me that they are just as stupid as their Liberian brethren in Liberia.
I think this infected person was brought to the U.S. because he knew he had an exposure, but no symptoms.
His relatives let him come.
He then went to the ER for the first time, but did not disclose that he had Ebola. Maybe he was afraid of deportation. It would be a case of gross malpractice to have a patient come from a highly publicized area with Ebola, and the physician not recognize the symptoms. Something is telling me this dude was not honest with the first ER staff. He then got really sick, and went to the ER the second time, and was honest about his exposure.
So now, we have a stupid populace of third worlders in our country spreading a disease by their ignorance.
If the Liberians, Sierra Leone's, and Guineans want to kill themselves because of stupidity, then let them. We should be closing all our borders, and investigating each passport to see where they have traveled before they are allowed into the country. Do not allow anyone in from the affected countries if they are not U. S citizens.
Mandatory quarantine from any U.S. citizen traveling from those countries.
This practice should be done by all Asian and Western countries.
As for me, I have N95 masks, 2 boxes of gloves ( I plan to get more today), bleach, iso gowns.
I plan today to buy some playtex gloves ( reusable if I run out of disposable gloves, soak them in bleach), and food at Costco.
I am really pissed off about this, as we should have closed the border to west Africa months ago.
I am also an RN, and let me tell you hospitals are not prepared for this. Our iso rooms are not at the same level as a level 4 biohazard, like the ones that the 2 physicians went to.
I also do not know if nurses are going to be willing to treat these patients without a whole lot of safety precautions. Nurses are so short staffed on the units, that they will make isolation mistakes.
This a a big cluster by the incompetent who is running this country.

Mythbusters did a show about this same scenario. I think they used spreading a cold.

Of course it would have been simpler and cheaper to quarantine all passengers from certain areas first.

It would be cheaper to not allow flights from those countries but that defeats the politicians point which is to spread it....if it it was not the point of this whole exercise then those countries would have already been quarantined by the powers that be.

Why are we letting anyone in the country from Liberia?

We are not SUPPOSED to know who is allowed in and how many are here. But your question was rhetorical; you know why.

The game of Ebola Roulette continues...

*click* spin *click* spin *click* spin…BANG!

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!

Bring Out Your Dead

We’re gonna need

a bigger cart!

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I hate lotion. Only use it at night. I don’t feel like my hands are clean enough with lotion on them.

With this news in and assuming patient zero flew into Dallas. Just how long will these patdown/molestations be considered sanitary? For workers or travelers. Incredible that while they were patting down Grandma and Grandpa a killer came in unseen.

Writing a scrip for antibiotics to get you to go away is SOP in most ER’s.

Bad news will be suppressed until the day before martial law is declared.

But of course!

You can't panic a population unless you lull them into believing they are perfectly safe first.

Then you rip the curtain away and show them the grim reality, in livid color and hype, hype, and hype it some more...through a few 24 hour news cycles, along with 'fresh' estimates by the WHO of just how many sick and dying (accompanied by graphic images) there are in West Africa...and the masses will BEG to have their Rights stripped away, and anything else, for that matter, just to be safe.

It’s the ER’s fault…yay!…Obama can blame the doctor.

Did the patient use the restroom? Could be very likely. What type of hygiene do they have? I don’t want to get gross, but can’t you spread microbes from feces and urine onto doorknobs upon exiting bathrooms? Could they carry them on their clothing when they sat down in a chair? If they wiped their wet hands on their pants after washing them, could there be any type of microbe transmission through the microscopic particles of water/moisture?
