26 seconds off the previous record. “Smashed” the record is a little excessive, imo.

Emmanuel Mutai also broke the previous record, if this article is accurate.

Averaging 4 mins 36 secs per mile. Incredible.

Ever since the Tobogans were disqualified for oversleeping, the Kenyans have dominated the Marathon.

I ran the Berlin Marathon four times. 26 seconds is a huge amount. That said, you can't compare marathon times easily since the courses vary so much. Berlin is a good course to set records on since it is basically flat.

The first ever sub 2:03 marathon, slicing almost half a minute off the previous best time put up by any of the world’s greatest runners in history. I think it’s safe to call the record “smashed”. :-)

That’s 4:41 per mile.

The article said the previous record was on the same course.

I consider 26 seconds as such a HARD smash that I must admit I suspect performance enhancing drugs. Though perhaps the differences in courses as pointed out above is enough to explain it.

Kenyan runners tend to have a natural advantage from living at altitude.

Note that I did not say anything about the current occupant of the White House.

I read it. It is no surprise that the previous record was set in Berlin as well. As I indicated, the course is flat and suited for fast times.
