Ebola: Does It Matter?
Doom and Bloom ^ | 9/16/14 | Joe Alton, M.D., aka Dr. Bones

Despite the best efforts of the World Health Organization and Doctors Without Borders, Ebola is expected to rage on in West Africa for another 12-18 months, with 20,000 cases predicted. Without coordination of relief efforts, the ability to contain the disease is limited and has been labeled a “failure” to date. Countries are sending supplies and equipment in piecemeal fashion. The U.S., for example, is setting up a 25 bed hospital for its part. Unfortunately, it’s far too little to make a dent in the epidemic.

It’s difficult for a person in a developed country to believe that medical systems, economies, even governments, might fail as a result of a virus. The average U.S. citizen suffers from what we call “Normalcy Bias”. This is the tendency to be believe that, since things have been just fine, everything will always remain so. This is foolhardy thinking at best, and dangerous thinking at worst. One wonders what the effect of normalcy bias was in 1918 when the Spanish Flu hit America.

I don’t have proof.

Do you think I’m incorrect?

rarestia:" As a Floridian, sure it concerns me, but everyone from the Farmer’s Almanac to NOAA is predicting a brutally cold winter in the northern hemisphere.
That coupled with healthcare facilities that are, for now, top notch, the containment of an outbreak would likely be swift."

Affectiionately , I must call you an idiot !!
Ebola can exist at -70 C, and maintain its vitality
Ebola synptoms already exist in the "New World" in Venezuela .
With NO SOUTHERN BORDER , do you still feel safe ?
Check out:"Venezuela on alert over mysterious, deadly disease (ebola?)"

Now do you feel so complacent ?
It's already at our our undefended Southern Broder..
That Obungler refuses to defend. Now , do you still feel safe ?
Do you expect true statements from our government ? .. or more propaganda?
How honest has the White Hut been recently ?

Then why would you make such a serious charge without proof.

In what way is that a serious charge?

One thing it would get someone banned from FR. I myself was accused once I was quickly able to prove the charges false, but it was a good experience.

Do you mean selling on FR’s website?

I meant people who sell elsewhere are on our prepper threads. Just like people on bitcoin/gold threads have a vested interest in those threads.

We are definitely suffering from an epidemic (more like pandemic) of normalcy bias. Every idiot who refuses to vaccinate his or her children because of the stupid belief that somehow, a tiny needle prick is more dangerous than a potentially deadly pathogen is absolutely steeped in normalcy bias. Because they've never seen these diseases, they believe they do not exist and that there is nothing to protect their children against. (They are not very different from people in the Ebola affected countries who do not believe Ebola is real.)

Despite this, few homes have gloves and medical masks in their medicine cabinet, even though they would be useful for any outbreak of infectious disease. [copied from article at link]

If you keep those items in your home, be aware that latex gloves have a shelf life, and might only last a few months under certain conditions of heat and humidity. Disposable gloves, of any material, should be inspected periodically to make sure they are still usable. Latex gloves that have light colored spots or patches on them are no longer protective.

I'm not saying Ebola is not a threat -- it is -- but some people on FR are continuously in duck and cover mode even without any imminent threat. Such a preoccupation is not helpful when it becomes an obsession and interferes with ordinary life.

Honestly, I think a lot of those people make a hobby of having something to be continually alarmed about. It's kind of like watching a horror movie, but being able to live it instead of just observing it. Once the Ebola outbreak dies down (or is forgotten), they'll just find something else to be afraid of. Being constantly at the mercy of some existential threat gives meaning to their lives...

Ebola can exist at -70 C, and maintain its vitality

As far as I know, ALL pathogens survive just fine at -70 C. That's how researchers store them for research, in really cold freezers.

How well Ebola survives in the environment, under natural temperatures, humidity, and so forth, is more important than its survival in a -70 C freezer under conditions meant to preserve it.

“Do you think I’m incorrect?”

Yes. I think everyone has a job in life but Kart simply bring all kinds of prepper/survival type threads to FR without any bias that I can see. I see no profit motive here.

This was in response to raresta comment #22 which indicqtes his compalcentcy
He suggests that since he is in Florida, he has no reason for concern due to climatic conditions
My response is that while he is complacent, he needs to be mindful , and aware of what is happening by the Southern Border,
or he will be cought unaware due to his complacentcy, or .. normalcy bias.

“I don’t have proof. Do you think I’m incorrect?”

Such proof would be trivial to obtain & present if it existed.
That you’d rather bicker than prove indicates: yes, you are incorrect.

Put up or shut up.

I’d say some posters to FR sell prepper supplies.

Got anyone in mind?

RE: vaccinations

I’m surprised a lot more people aren’t mistrustful of vaccines and medicine in general given

A) The government’s wanting to run/control it.
B) The government’s propensity to conduct experiments and procedures upon the public without their knowledge or consent (bio warfare experiments in SF bay/NY subways, letting guys wander around for 20 years with syphilis while observing them, radiation/atomic testing, forced sterilizations/eugenics, etc...)

Truthfully, until Ebola gets into the 100,000 fatalities a day league, it is small potatoes. About the only contender in mortality like that is a “killer” influenza.

At the current rate of transmission that will be in May, next year. That makes it a big deal now. At least for anyone with an ounce of sense.

Funny thing about assumptions they are rarely correct.

I was accused of be a ‘Goldbug’ once and pushing preparedness as a way to sell gold, but then I pointed out several threads in which I was taken to task by real ‘Goldbugs’ for not being a fan of gold, but claiming beans and bullets were better investments. Personally I have a handful of silver coins and that is the extent of my precious metal investments.

Epidemics of this kind do not work like that. It has probably reached near its peak already. This can be said with some certainty because of several factors.

1) It is not yet pulmonary, transmitted by coughs and sneezes.

2) While people may be infected for just a few to 21 days before showing symptoms, they are only infectious to others when they are showing symptoms. This is a major flaw.

3) From showing symptoms to death is about 10 days, during half of which they are incapacitated. So while appearing very sick to others, they only have 5 days to infect others.

Put it together, and this means that if you stay away from sick people and things they have contaminated, you will probably not get the disease. While thousands will die before the public learns this lesson, they *will* learn it.

I know how epidemics work. I’ve studied them both academically and professionally. On what evidence do you base your assertion that it has already peaked? All the evidence I’ve seen says exactly the opposite. In fact, the rate of transmission has spiked in just the last two weeks.

The factors you cite, aside from being either outright wrong or at least misleading, in no way support your assertion that the epidemic has peaked, even if they were completely true as stated.
