There’s actually rather vehement debate about the issue in liberal quarters. Some liberals support Scottish independence due to Scottish people being more Socialist than average, while others oppose it because it would make the UK less Socialist. Some also oppose Scottish independence on the grounds that it makes it more difficult to form a One World Government under the United Nations.

Sorry. Yes, the agreement back in the early 40’s had the US and England build and fund naval shipyards and I am sure Scotland got some of that (as British Isles).

Why they would want to do this is absolutely beyond me,

Because they can tell you in GREAT DETAIL WHAT THEY DON’T WANT, but don’t have a clue as to what they want.

If we carved off the cesspools called cities, and let them govern themselves, and the rest of us govern ourselves,

I have no doubt who would thrive and who would flounder.

Stupid idea. Neither part would thrive and both would flounder.

>>The most recent example of this was the demise of the soviet union, it is an interesting study of where assets and liabilities and power went.<<

yes — and it was more like countries headed for the door when the guard was asleep. That was a breakup not a secession.

>>The circumstances here are a little different.

But it may be a prelude for the US, so I see your interest.<<

Highly unlikely but Quebec, OTOH...

Huh! All right... I can’t argue with that much counter-data; just believe me when I say that the liberals around my area are all “No! Don’t let them secede!!” types...

Curiouser and curiouser...

So the only Naval Base is Clyde then, plus 3 helicopters at Gannet.

Clyde is important for subs, but not a large part of UK fleet.

Really?

You really think cities provide some sort of benefit to the rest of the state they’re in?

Others, chime in with your opinions...

if Scotland can secede, then so can Texas under international law. Liberals can’t have an independent Texas, now can they...

I guess it may feel good to say things like that, but dividing up the country to the point where it looks like a Swiss cheese isn't going to be good for anybody.

Having to go through immigration and customs to get from home to office or warehouse to factory would make chaos of production. And indeed, there's no way that such a separation could be effected without it being disastrous.

Metro NYC has a GDP of 1.33 trillion dollars to 1.55 dollars depending on how you measure it. That's greater than all but 12 nations on earth, and I don't think all of that comes from the suburbs.

I was going to say that China would thrive and we would flounder, but since China relies on us to buy their products, they'd have trouble to. You'd have to look at some of our enemies to see who'd benefit.

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe.

The mobs of great cities add just so much to support of pure government as sores do to the strength of the human body

I view great cities as pestilential to the morals, the health and the liberties of man. True, they nourish some of the elegant arts; but the useful ones can thrive elsewhere; and less perfection in the others, with more health, virtue and freedom, would be my choice.

Thomas Jefferson

In conservative and libertarian circles in the US, there is sentimental support for independence based on gauzy and false notions that small countries are almost inherently more free and prosperous than large ones.

On the facts though, Scottish independence would be gravely injurious to both Scotland and Britain due to heavy transition costs and Scotland's inadequate economic base. An independent Scotland would lack the resources to maintain its current standard of living or to defend itself.

In addition, an independent Scotland would be ruled by the incompetent, resentful, and rigidly ideological Leftists of the Scottish National Party. They already issue promises of expanded welfare and talk like idiots of an independent Scotland making ends meet by raising taxes on corporations and the rich.

In power, the SNP would rapidly make Scotland into a thuggish, impoverished, quasi-Marxist satrapy from which investment money and human talent flee. My guess is that enough Scots see that menace for Scotland to narrowly vote against independence.

I think there are so many liberal and labor MP’s from Scotland that separation would leave the Tories in firm control of the Commons in London, although David Cameron may no longer be PM, after being the man who lost Scotland.

This may be why liberals fear Scottish Independence. Just speculating.

Because they like big, centralized government. Individuals have a lot less influence and control.
