Arming Syrian rebels, key part of Obama's war strategy, gets crucial support from House GOP

Lawmakers raced Monday to authorize an expanded mission to arm and train moderate Syrian rebels before heading back to the campaign trail, with House Republicans preparing legislation backing a central plank of President Barack Obama's strategy against the Islamic State group.

The authorization under consideration will likely be included as an amendment to a spending bill Congress must pass to keep the government open until mid-December. That would give lawmakers the opportunity to hold a separate debate and vote on the matter — something members of both parties want.

The measure doesn't authorize U.S. combat troops in Iraq or Syria or explicitly ban them, reflecting a congressional divide between hawks seeking tougher action than that proposed by Obama and lawmakers weary from more than a decade of U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Democrats are reviewing the proposal, which would enable the military to take over what has previously been a limited, covert operation to beef up rebels battling extremist groups and President Bashar Assad's army. The administration isn't likely to protest the conditions. It has sent more than 1,000 troops to Iraq to provide military assistance and bolster security of U.S. diplomatic facilities and personnel. But Obama, too, opposes any U.S. ground offensive.

Republicans were to gather for internal talks Tuesday morning. A House vote could be held Thursday, by which time lawmakers will have had opportunities to question the administration's top national security officials.

KEYWORDS:
Now the ongoing covert war can be officially declared by congress. And the Syrian rebels can tear up their signed agreement with ISIL not to fight them. And if there are any Christians left standing anywhere in the Islamic State they can rest assured that they will be safe any day now or possibly after the November elections. Maybe.

Just why would the “I want to lose” GOP go along with anything the chronic liar, Clown Prince nobama, suggests? This is madness writ large.

This is the worst part of his plan and will only make the situation worse, of course Barack Obama can ~NEVER~ truly admit that he’s wrong-so come hell or high water he was going to try to topple Assad.

Bad idea, he should be tacitly supporting Assad as he’s the best thing that county has to stability.

Good Lord! If Obama wants to arm them I guarantee they are radicals who want to enslave the world under a Caliphate.

Because that's what Obama does. That's who he is!

Doesn't anyone ever watch Obama’s actions?!

Who exactly do you arm. I have no problem with assisting the Kurds, they have walked the talk if you will. The Syrian opposition is seeking alliances with ISIS in some cases. I haven’t a clue as to who we can trust. It certainly isn’t anyone Obama might promote. He has a really bad track record in Eygpt and Libya, to name just two.

That might be one ‘H’ of a plan IF there was such a thing as a Moderate Syrian rebel. Seems to me we’ve been this road before, and it blew up in our faces.

They should ONLY approve arming of the Kurds. Screw the “moderate” anti-Al-Asad forces in Syria (you know, the ones who sold the American hostage to ISIS so they could behead him). Just bomb the hell out of ISIS in both Syria and Iraq.

Make the Kurds so strong that ISIS will never attempt to encroach upon them again. The Kurds will need to expand the size of their autonomous region so that it is more defensible. And that increased Kurdish area should incorporate the northern Iraq Christians, the Yazidis’ populations and the areas that Sadam Hussein unleashed his “Arabization” policies and ethnic cleansing.

The Kurds are the ONLY folks in the area upon which the West can depend long term.

Yet another reckless foray into trusting a gaggle of Islamist radicals to at least make a token move at appearing “friendly.” After Libya and Egypt, we’re somehow expected to believe that, for the first time since he took power in 2009, Obama has it right... that the headchoppers attempting to overthrow Assad are going to schedule a few hours each week fighting ISIS. I’m amazed so few in our power elite even squeak in protest at this madness. The drooling, mumbling assurances last night by McCain on Hannity’s show don’t inspire confidence... at all.
