The coin toss for a college football game is a fairly simple thing. A captain from the visiting team calls heads or tails and ordinarily, if he wins the toss, he gets to choose whether his team will receive the kickoff to start the game or he can defer that choice to the second half.

Apparently one of Texas’ team captains had trouble understanding this against UCLA on Saturday.

The Bruins won the toss and elected to defer their choice to the second half. At that juncture, Texas was given the opportunity to choose whether to receive the opening kickoff or go on defense. When this happens, 99.9 percent of the time, a team will choose to receive the ball to start the game since it will not have the opportunity in the second half, but inexplicably, Texas chose to kick.

KEYWORDS: strong
In a defensive game, Strong gave the game to UCLA by giving them a bonus possession, which they rammed down their throats.

Not a winning strategy. Only the coach's fault.

The Longhorns coach is black so look for coin tosses to be labeled “racist.”

Texas was ahead and lost in the last minutes of the game. Hard to see how the bonehead move ultimately had an impact. A late 4th quarter stop and texas wins.

Abner Haynes, running back/captain of the Dallas Texans/KC Chiefs did this way back in the 60’s. He was forever labeled a doofus. Coach Hank Stram told him that if he won the toss to take the wind and that would probably mean they would have to kick. Stram shouldn’t have added the second part. Haynes won the toss and chose to kick. The other team got the ball and the wind.

Went to sleep during the second half and did not know Texas lost till I saw this thread. Also, found out this morning that I missed the most exciting part of the game; that being a fan falling over a rail. It’s happened a couple of times at Rangers gamed but I think this was a first for Jerry’s World. Thud :)

Biggest impact was UCLA using a backup QB against Texas first D.

It’s a new “winning” strategy they learned from the Jerry and the Cowboys. When applied properly, you lead until the final two minutes and then lose the game on one unnecessary fowl, stupid offensive play (pass interception/fumble), or wrong defensive pass/run formation.

Remember, the Cowboys are college educated professionals and assorted felons with extensive training and experience, and the Longhorns are only uneducated inexperienced college undergrads still in the learning phase.

The coaching, well...the play selection, strategy, and decision making couldn’t be better. The boss is always right...right?

Unfortunately the drunk who falls is often injury-free while the guy he lands on is injured.

so you believe that the ridicule the captain endured due to being an idiot did not impact him during the game.

also, I’ll always play against a team that allows me to have an extra possession. My odds of winning are better that way.
