And thanks to Jan Sobieski and his Winged Hussars, they were repulsed. Otherwise, we might have to listen to some muzzein caterwauling five times a day and suffer under a muslim president.

Oh ...

The Ottomans were much more of a threat to Europe the first time they laid siege to Vienna than the second time. Of course, that was little comfort to the inhabitants of Vienna.

I just bought DAY OF THE SIEGE.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1899285/

While not up to the standards of the epics from the Bronson studios in the 1960s (55 DAYS AT PEKING, EL CID, FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE), it is still a good movie.
It was listed as a WAR/FANTASY. I saw no fantasy in it.

If given a BIG budget the story of the siege of Vienna (Or even Lepanto)would be fascinating, but it probably would not sell in the moslem countries so Hollywood will continue to churn out high dollar super hero crap.

Some of the best movies today are turned out by small foreign studios.

The relieving forces under Viceroy of Sicily drove the
Ottoman army off the island

Only few hundred men remained able to resist when siege was broken

The first time was in 1589.

1529 - Turks were done in by weather, it rained heavily all that year

Turks were unable to bring up heavy siege guns until too late

On September 11, 1563 approximately 6000 Christians led by about 500 Knights of St. John defeated about 50,000 Muslims and broke the siege of Malta.

Jan Sobieski’s Polish cavalry and Bavarian and other Christian armies totalling about 100,000 men broke the siege of of Vienna on September 11 and September 12, 1683 and defeated about 300,000 Muslims. Sobieski had entrusted his kingdom to the protection of the Blessed Virgin (Our Lady of Czestochowa) before the battle.

Like today, Muslims did not take prisoners or spare civilians. Christian women and children were raped, tortured and murdered. Some were sold into slavery. Wounded and captured men were slaughtered.

September 11 is an important date to Muslims. They want to attack Christians on September 11.

The fall of the city would open the way to conquer europe..

Conquering Europe would have been a tall order. in the 1680's, France under King Louis XIV was a military powerhouse, and Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Brandenburg-Prussia all had potent armies. But had Vienna fallen, the Ottoman Empire would have likely have become a major player in European politics, at least for a while.

Good to see these historic events mentioned repeatedly . I first learned of the events at Malta, here, at FreeRepublic"> in 2007, which linked to a Daily Mail article. Better late, than never, eh?

I often lament the disappearance of a major project called "Victoria" from Poland. Did growing censorship of negative inference of anything dealing with Islam and Muhammedans play a part in the absolute silence (scrubbing from the web) from Polands ” Victoria ” projects ($50m Euro budget film, theme park, museum) based on the story of the Polish victory in the 1683 Battle of Vienna. Possible highlights were to include Hollywood cast and “Lord of the Rings” special effects crew…discussed even here sometime in in 2007-08? The original links to the project included incredibly beautiful soundtrack samples and historic details of some of the featured characters. Shame it’s no longer online. story discussing the Victoria project, via local life/krakow in 2007

I just read John Stoye's Siege of Vienna It is much more enlightening to read a good history than to watch a movie.

The Turkish big guns weren’t all that effective. Their rait of fire was abysmal, once ever three hours or so, and their accuracy was worse. To be more effective than pure luck they had to get close enough to the city walls to be in range of the city’s many smaller more accurate guns. They were like the Turkish pipers and drummers- aiming to intimidate the defenders with their noise and with the sheer size of the cannons which were actually technologically obsolete before they were first cast.
