Apple Unveils Larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Apple unveiled the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, an update of its flagship smartphone with larger screens.

“Today we are launching the biggest advancement in the history of the iPhone,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the start of the company’s press event in Cupertino, Calif., where Apple is headquartered.

The iPhone 6 will feature a larger 4.7 inch retina HD screen, while the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus model also will be offered. The full 1080p HD screen features no borders with glass that covers the entire surface and curves around the edges of the thinner device.

A new camera protrudes a bit out the back. While it has a new sensor, the camera is still 8 megapixels. However, the new camera does a better job of recognizing faces in scenes, and delivers better focus, especially in low light conditions, with the iPhone 6 including digital image stabilization, while the iPhone 6 Plus has optical image stabilization.

An improved video camera also enables slow motion video to be captured at 120 fps or 240 fps.

The iPhone 6 screen will boast over 1 million pixels, the iPhone 6 Plus over 2 million pixels.

The handsets, with faster Wi-Fi built in, also feature a new A8 chip, which makes graphics 84 times faster than the original iPhone. The devices also are 50% more energy efficient, although battery life remains about the same as the more recent iPhone5s. The iPhone 6 Plus, however, features a longer battery, given its larger size.

Still, the A8 chip marks an improvement over previous iPhones, given that it’s 25% faster when it comes to processing power and boasts 50% faster graphics.

Calls can now also be made via Wi-Fi when cell conditions are poor.

Pricing for the iPhone 6 starts at $199 and goes to $399. The iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299, with the highest priced at $499.

The devices, which become available Sept. 19, will come in gold, silver and space gray.

The iPhone 5 continues to perform well for Apple.

The smartphone, introduced in 2012, is still its most popular handset with a 27% share, followed closely by last year’s iPhone 5S, at 25%, according to research firm Localytics.

Yet the update to the iPhone, first launched in 2007, is important to Apple since it represents over half of the company’s revenue.

Analysts already anticipate that the new iPhone 6 models will sell more than 75 million handsets by the end of the year.

While the iPhone essentially created the smartphone revolution, Apple has faced some stiff competition recently from Samsung with its Galaxy line of devices. Amazon, however, has struggled with its Amazon Fire Phone, which the company recently discounted by $200 to 99 cents in order to boost sales.

Apple live streamed the reveal of its new devices and software here from the Flint Performing Arts Center in Cupertino, Calif.

“Today, we have some amazing products to share with you and we think at the end of the day you will agree that this too is a very key day for Apple,” Cook said.

That acquisition was more about the music curation. That and $2.3 B is about two weeks worth of AAPL FCF.

I have some nice dress watches from the 1970s, cost big bucks. People back then thought nothing of dropping $500 to $1000 on a wristwatch that did nothing but display time - and that was 1970s money. These watches from Apple at $349 seem very inexpensive for what they offer.

That $349 Apple Watch price is for the low end starting price with rubberized straps. There are premium Apple Watches that come in 18k gold that uses an alloy that according to Apple is "twice as hard as ordinary 18k gold," that I suspect will be upwards of a couple grand. Those appeared to be available in white, yellow, and rose gold.

I currently wear a Stührling meteorite dial Turbillon mechanical watch in Rose Gold with a deployant clasp black Alligator leather band that set me back over $2500. It just tells time. . . not even a date. But it's a great piece of jewelry that goes well with my large black diamond and rose gold commitment ring I wear for my relationship with my girlfriend. I like the looks of the Apple Watch in rose gold with the magnetic quilted black leather. I may switch to the Apple Watch and keep the Stührling for dress.

I’ve never understood ‘fitness buffs’. If you’re fat, just accept it. Some people are just BIG. Some are skinny. No sense in fighting it.

I’ve never been overweight, and I believe the only time I should run is when my life - the live of someone I care about is in danger. Not something I would do for amusement or fun. lol

Like you, I prefer Android over any iPhone. I've had my new LG-G3 2 months and absolutely love it for its superior display resolution, 3000mA battery (>24hrs) and thinner beveled body. I6+ looks like a heavy, clunky box in comparison.

I6+ 1920 x 1080

Apple will never recover losing S. Jobs as long as that fool Tim Cook is running the company. They still make great stuff but the hard fought momentum will peter out as Cook worries more about hiring quotas and Globull Warming then the leading edge that was the soul of Apple.

That looks nice!

I’ve used Samsung for the past couple of years, but I might have to give that LG a look! (LG was my first ever cell phone actually - about 12 or so years ago)

Funny you should mention that. I've had a cell phone since the brick days I recently switched to a Samsung flip phone that I picked up new for $15. It does somewhat remind me of the Razr.

The best call quality I've had in a decade and the battery life is incredible.

Would love a phone that was maybe as big as a credit card and just a few cards thick... If it would fit in my wallet, I'd like it even more.

Before the iPhone people thought being the smallest possible was way cool, some phones looked more like a USB thumb Drive.

These threads always turn into Apple bashing. Fun to watch the droid fans accuse all Apple users of being moronic fan boys that have been zombiezed, sort of like Mitt supporters.

you and I are not the customer this is designed to attract.

I watch a lot of Poker tournaments and among the more successful players there seems to be an obsession with expensive watches, some look like they should be hanging on a wall somewhere.

I haven't worn a watch for many years, don't need one now, but the iWatch is hardly a watch, like the iPhone it is a fair phone connected to a really powerful computer. The iWatch requires an iPhone to function which most have seemed to not notice.

(I really live in the woods/swamp)

And users like you probably constitute 95% of the potential buyers, can't imagine why they don't go after that market. </s>

really? I thought it was rather impressive. Everyone of course for a long time that it was going to be bigger.

I think the credit card feature will be a big deal. I hate carrying around a bunch of cards.

Also, the faster Wifi and LTE seemed like a good deal.

The improved camera and features seems impressive also.

I have noticed that the size of ones phone is inversely related to a persons IQ.

Well… I have a few comments on that. I'm somewhat fat and unsuccessful in fighting it. Haven't given up, but hate exercise and love food. But I don't think people should accept it. I have a friend with several adult kids. Her daughter was very fat and obese, ever since she was a toddler; she had self-esteem problems. Her sons were slim and athletic, involved in baseball from pee-wee and up. One son joined the Marines, and afterwards became a fitness guru. He put his sister on a plan, and within six months she became a hottee, very slim and attractive at 27. She is quite happy now, jogging in marathons, something she never thought she would do. So, young people should not just accept being fat.

These threads always turn into Apple bashing.

Always been the case, from the early days of TRS-80 and Commodore Pe lovers on up. Funny how all those other products that people touted faded away into obscurity. And how the haters are attracted to these threads like flies to an electric zapper.

Also very true.
