Toronto: Denzel Washington Recalls N-Word Insults at 'Equalizer' Press Conference

Denzel Washington’s experience shooting his new movie The Equalizer in Boston revived memories of racial discrimination he encountered more than 30 years ago.

Washington was at the Toronto Film Festival press conference Sunday for Equalizer, which premieres at Roy Thomson Hall. For most of the time, he, director Antoine Fuqua and actors Chloe Grace Moretz and Marton Scokas talked about acting methods and the uneasiness of the first day of shooting. But a question about filming the movie in Boston and a comment Washington made about his wife’s upcoming one-woman show led to unexpected revelations Washington recalled how about three decades ago he was in Boston with wife Pauletta Pearson Washington, who was performing in a play, and some people in his hotel thought he was a pimp, and she was a prostitute. Security was called, and a fight broke out.

Ah... I fondly recall the first time the "H-word" was hurled at me. My Volvo Wagon had hit a wooden pallet on the exit ramp into Newark off I-78 and I was on the side of Clinton Avenue attempting to change out the wheel.

A local child, I mean, a local "unarmed" adolescent (bless his heart) stood at the top of a hill overlooking a vacant lot next to me, and as I stood there, tire iron in hand, the youth... undoubtedly on his way down to the soup kitchen where he volunteered his time "community organizing" yelled down at me, "Hey, H*****! Imma come down there, an' f**k you up!"

Oddly, there was nothing wrong with my horn... I mean it was not honking... so I am not sure why he was calling me a H-word.

How many times do you think Mr. Washington has used the N-Word himself as a term of affection to fellow Blacks?

Thousand times more than an insult directed at him personally.

The original Equalizer was British and lived in New York.

Does Hollywood have to destroy EVERY old TV show I used to watch?

Denzel misunderstood. They were saying “Denzel is near” as they saw him coming.

He is one of the good guys in Hollywood, I would imagine he was asked a question and he answered. Unlike some blacks in Hollywood he doesnt seem to carry a chip on his shoulder.

Beef with Tarantino

Denzel took exception to the number of racial slurs evident in Tarantino’s work, and when the director visited the set of “Crimson Tide,” Denzel let him have it.

When Tarantino tried to move the discussion to a more appropriate location, Denzel wouldn’t let him. He thinks Tarantino is a fine artist, but that he should take more care with racial slurs.

My question to him is how many times did he hear that from his Bros and how is that different? And racism must be rampant because you know he and his fellow Black actors got wealthy on ticket sales to Blacks only, right?

And, black people are the only individuals that have EVER had a racial slur launched at them?

I think that’s how they promote new movies nowadays.

Oprah did the same sort of thing before The Butler opened.

People can call me...well,you know....24/7/365 if I could be worth 1/10th of what Denzel Washington is worth.

Like most liberal agenda items, discussing race in America has become simplistically childish and the “conversation” is all one way.

A year ago, my Filipina wife had some bum shout “Go back to China! Go back to China! Go back to China!” at her in the Costco parking lot. She ignored him, and now she laughs about it.

But I don’t think it would win her any sympathy points with liberals. Filipinas tend to be overachievers who believe in things like hard work and education...

The only thing most Filipina ladies have to worry about in parking lots are whistles and catcalls.

I can honestly saw the most racist city I have been to by whites is Boston.
It seems their tolerance and diversity there only goes to those who cannot afford to live in their white rich towns

just said the same\

racism by whites in Boston is by far the worst I have ever encountered.

Boston also had the national guard for bussing but it always seems that Boston should never ben mentioned when it comes to race riots and racism as the media likes to look at southerners instead.

I’ve always thought he was one of the good guys. Not so sure anymore.

I have to remind myself at times to not admire some actors, just because they played an admirable character in a movie. Case in point: The Book of Eli is an amazing film, but it's presumptuous for me to think that Denzel Washington shares his character's Christian faith.

Thats the thing, Denzel Washington is supposedly a very strong Christian.
