The U.S. public health establishment buries overwhelming evidence that abstinence is a cause of heart disease and early death. People deserve to know that alcohol gives most of us a higher life expectancy—even if consumed above recommended limits.

Exactly. I can see some minor benefit, but certainly not anything quite heavy. Alcohol destroys the liver. No question.

Seemingly confirmed by Harvard U’s multi-decade Grant Study of American men, where after 7 decades of participation men who had lived long enough stated that alcohol abuse had been their biggest problem and had a negative impact on their lives.

There’s a point when as a young adult you either get some responsibility or have it thrust upon you. At that time you have to dial back on the hooch. Just the way it is.

Alcoholics don’t need any rationalizations to drink.

It all depends on what you drink. Wine and beer are fine. Hard liquor should be drank sparingly.

I told my doctor I have about six a night but not all the time, she called me an alcoholic. So much for being honest. Needless to say I’m changing doctors. I can drink 12 (or more) easily if I wanted to but I’ve cut way back.

My liver is fine, so is my heart and everything else.

Many research studies done by respected researchers have shown that light to moderate alcohol consumption is preferable to either heavy consumption or abstinence.

Never mind the problems they cause others by actions. It destroys the liver and even in healthy bingers, who think it is cool, kills them within hours.

I never understood the obsession with alcohol. It even tastes awful. I won’t ingest something that tastes bad.

I thought this article put the drinking thing into perspective quite nicely. . .non-judgmental. Further into the article are some suggestions you can share if anyone you know may have a problem.

Beer is proof that God loves mankind.

So is prime rib! Remember,as Archie Bunker once said..."you don't *buy* beer, you just *rent* it."

Even worse is acetaminophen:

Tylenol/Acetaminophen and liver disease

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/46607.php

Liver damage
Acute overdoses of acetominophen can cause potentially fatal liver damage. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, “Acetaminophen can cause serious liver damage if more than directed is used.” and in 2011 the FDA required manufacturers to update labels of all prescription combination acetaminophen products to warn of the potential risk for severe liver injury and launched a public education program to help consumers avoid overdose. The risk may be heightened by chronic alcohol abuse.

Acetominophen toxicity is the foremost cause of acute liver failure in the Western world, and accounts for most drug overdoses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

According to the FDA, in the United States there were “56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths per year related to acetaminophen-associated overdoses during the 1990s. Within these estimates, unintentional acetaminophen overdose accounted for nearly 25 percent of the emergency department visits, 10 percent of the hospitalizations, and 25 percent of the deaths.”

I’m with you…it does destroy health, which I’ve seen up close and personal in my own family. Really tragic. Besides trashing the liver, it kills brain cells. Even one drink.

Rumor has it Mark Twain was told by his doctor that if he would give up drinking, smoking, and chasing women, he would live longer, to which Twain responded, that life would sure seem a lot longer.

I think it was Twian, when chastised about smoking, replied "If you can't enjoy the trip through life, why make the journey?"

Yes, but there aren’t many people ingesting Tylenol daily in whole packs or having Tylenol parties.

I wish we would get over the aspirin paranoia including myself, fueled by Tylenol lackies. Cannot believe the stupid aspirin commercial where the young twerp says he’s not having a heart problem to the stewardess who offers him aspirin.

I try to take a low-dose aspirin every day, but I often forget. I take Advil for arthritis, which seems to work better than aspirin for some reason. Both of my parents had serious heart disease, as have my two brothers. Each brother has had blockages that required surgery.
