The following is a list of things we know about the film: 1) It will be too long.
2) It will deviate from the book too much.
3) Important characters will be mischaracterized in egregious fashion.
4) There will be stupid amounts of videogame-like action.

You do know that some of the material for the Hobbit movie was taken from Tolkien's Unfinished Tales ?

Yes some things came from unfinished tales; however, other things were completely made up by the director. Such as Legolas being in the story, a female elf having a romance with a dwarf, the dwarves entering Smaugs lair and thereby negating the entire reason for bringing Bilbo in the first place; etc,etc...

"You do know that some of the material for the Hobbit movie was taken from Tolkien's Unfinished Tales ?" I would say that vast sections of the second movie were completely made up by Jackson and have nothing whatever to do with any of Tolkien's tales - finished, or unfinished.

Yes indeed. The script so far is a mess. It started well, but rapidly degenerated. Worse is the blatant video-game-izing of everything. The worst was the barrel episode in the last one. What was meant to be funny and goofy turns into a cross between a bloody massacre, a theme park ride and a videogame.
The Hobbit in its proper form is a short, tightly written story with alternating thrills and humor, with a bittersweet ending.

Tried watching Desolation of Smaug yesterday. Made less than halfway through, OMG that is one of the stupidest movies I have ever been forced to watch.
From about 5 minutes in, I felt my brain cells dying off.

I would hope that when the trilogy is released on dvd/blueray, that the director’s cut removes most of the garbage from the story.

"I would hope that when the trilogy is released on dvd/blueray, that the directors cut removes most of the garbage from the story." I don't see how they can fix it, and really, most of the garbage came from the director himself.
I had such high hopes, too...

I'm recording it today since we have a free HBO/cinemax weekend on Direct TV. That bad, huh? The first hobbit flick wasn't all that great, either.

Yup. PJ is a great director, if he isn’t given too much leeway.
Unfortunately, since LOTR he’s given the leeway to do whatever he wants.

It’s definitely long, and a setup for a water plume ride, and a roller coaster ride at Disney World, as well as a 3-D moving car gimbal of the movie during the dragon battle inside the Lonely Mountain.

Eggzackly. Not a huge fan of the original or the earlier remakes, but the Jackson version was just awful.
Sad, he did such a great job, generally speaking with the LOTR series
