Lately, reading news links from Free Republic is getting insufferable. It seems that 95 percent of the news sources are mined with scripts and the like that want access to your computer or run time consuming ads.

Trying to figure out the security settings for IE browser has become a real challenge. I think I need to hire a full time IT expert just top read the news.

Does anyone know of a web source that can help me get the best settings to stop the sneaks but yet still allow me ample access to these sites?

I did Ghostery for a bit, didn’t take to it. Felt too controlling. Or maybe I just didn’t know how to manipulate it to allow sites that I wanted it to.

 Let's assume you have a newer computer and an AntiVirus program installed.
Try to use PaleMoon as your default browser (it is lighter than Firefox on your system).
Install AdBlock Plus add-on.
Install  Ghostery add-on.  Setup Ghostery by blocking all scripts.  Later if you want to, you can unblock some scripts i.e. Disqus in order to read comments related to articles on the websites you visit.
Install Malwarebytes free version.  During installation take the checkmark out from the option of having a full, trial version installed.  Run update, and run a full scan.  Quarantine/kill all the bad guys it finds. If you like the program, buy the full version.
Avoid the so called "ToolBar"-s to be installed/added to your browser.  All of them are eating up resources, slowing down your Internet surfing, and spying on your Internet activity.  If you have some installed/embedded into your IE already, you can uninstall or disable them.
Something to remember:  
-  In PaleMoon go to Tools -> Options and adjust your privacy and security options to your needs.
-  If you make financial transactions using PaleMoon, then you can "whitelist" those sites in AdBlockPlus and Ghostery to avoid 'hick-ups' during transactions.

The above is just a small advice in a nutshell.  I hope it will work for you, but please note that some sites, like TheBlaze, are really heavy on most machines.  This is just a very bad decision from the company owing the website, or their Webmaster is not a qualified person for the job.

Yep, except I sometimes get annoyed with Noscript if I want to read Disqus comments.

Use the little thingy like an equal sign with three bars in the upper left corner. Go to bookmarks - import bookmarks and settings, and then only choose bookmarks and passwords. I'd uncheck the search engines and browsing history, and then set my preffered search engine up manually. (Otherwise it could bring in a bogus page that'll start your problems up again.)

Then go to the same three bars, and click settings. There you can turn on the home button, choose your home page, what to when opened from scratch, etc... I like setting it so if I exit chrome, it opens back to everything I had open when I closed it.

The way I see it, unless I’m at a google website there should be no data going to google.

I use Pale Moon. It’s a less resource intensive fork of Firefox. Also, consider noscript or just manually enable/disable javascript as needed. I try to have it disabled unless absolutely necessary.

Also, instead of searching via Google, try ixquick or startpage.

I recommend Pale Moon for a browser.

Unfortunately, Pale Moon is not fully compatible with many Firefox add-ons. That's a killer.

You’ve got adware/spyware installed - they can sneak it in with other useful apps if you’re not super careful.

I think malwarebytes will get rid of what you’re seeing -

underlined stuff, popup pages, etc?

You have to dig into the options button and tailor it for your use. For example, I let Discus and LiveFyre through because so many sites use that for comments anymore.
