CVS changes name, stops tobacco sales a month early
AP ^ | September 3, 2014

As CVS sharpens its focus on customer health, the nation's second-largest drugstore chain will tweak its corporate name and stop the sale of tobacco nearly a month sooner than planned.

CVS Caremark will now be known as CVS Health. The signs on its roughly 7,700 drugstores won't change, so the tweak may not register with shoppers.

CVS stores aren’t all that well thought of in the Prairie States.
They never have made very bright branding decisions either.

Years ago they entered this market by buying out Rex all and then ditched that established name for an acronym no one had heard of. Decades later, they are still mostly known for buying out better stores which they can’t compete with in terms of customer service or quality.

I think CVS is making a risky gamble. I am betting it is going to go as well as JCPenney’s gamble to cater to gays.

CVS is publicly listed...How much are you “gambling”? Please let us know the amount you are short selling.

But will I still be able to buy inflatable swim rings and As Seen On TV spiral vegetable-spaghetti gizmos?!?

They are just about the most worthless “pharmacy”, ever.

I miss Revco.

Now we have Walgreens.

Yay!

I don’t smoke but if CVS thinks it can prevent people from exercising their free will to smoke, a lot of folks like me will never set foot in one again. Not a boycott, but an exercise of free will.

Yup agree, Already locally here many have sworn off CVS then again there is a strong libertarian streak in my town.. and they realize that the bans start with smoking and then lead to fast food, booze, guns, and everything else. This really ticked off a lot of people here both smokers and non smokers. Thankfully we have plenty of smoke shops, Wallgreens, Walmart and many other places to buy them in town far cheaper.

CVS is publicly listed

So is JCPenney's so what is your point. The CEO of JC Penney made a stupid decision and it alienated their core demographics and it bit them in the a$$.

Alienating smokers is going to affect their bottom line, guaranteed. I'm not buying or shorting CVS. Not sure why that's relevant to the questionable gamble of their decision to stop selling cigarettes.

Thank goodness we still have a local independent pharmacy who REALLY knows us.

Gerry, the pharmacist suggested we look for coupon and discount offers for the medicines we need and help us find them online so we now pay less.

One time my husband ran over to the store to pick something up and when he got there he realized he had left his wallet at home. “Here, take the prescription. You can pay me next time you come in.” was what Gerry told him.

Like to have that happen at a CVS store.

I don’t understand how the CVS pharmacies around here survive. They always seem empty, dirty and unpleasant. They feel like a liberal social program.

It’s good to know that the store won’t be selling that dreaded tobacco stuff.

It’ll put your mind at ease as you check out with a cart full of liquor, soft drinks (HFCS) Doritos, Cheeze Puffs and other assorted MSG laden stuff and of course your prescription strength psycho active SSRIs, pseudoephedrine, Xanax and sleep aids.

And don’t forget the “Just For Men” hair color and Testosterone Gel.

CVS is looking long-term, thinking that there's more money to be made, down the road, by putting "Little Clinic" style health-care services into its stores. They're dropping cigs and tobacco products to make it easier for them to partner with the health care providers that will provide the staff for the clinic operations.

I was in a CVS during the winter and noticed a can of Campbell’s low sodium chicken noodle soup was twice the cost of the same size and brand (regular sodium). I pointed it out to a worker. CVS is low-sodium-phobic.

Guess will need to go in, make some selections, go to checkout and ASK about no cigarettes and what is the policy for guns in the store.

If you don’t get the ‘correct’ answers, prior to swiping your card (they just more or less ‘refuse’ to run your card anymore) just say ‘Thanks, you apparently don’t want my business, I will not be purchasing these items.’

If you want to be particularly vindictive, get some frozen stuff so they basically have to shut the station down to restock.

Eventually someone will question all the returns prior sale.

They’ll make more money down the road, to be sure.

They’ll still sell morning-after abortion pills.

I like my local CVS. I get good service, and the pharmacists know me by name. They are fast and efficient. However, there is another CVS near me that sucks.

And four aisles of makeup and hair care.

The actual “first aid” department is almost an afterthought.

I’m pretty sure they will still sell over-salted and over-sugared treats however. And demon soda.... ;)

They’ll make more money down the road, to be sure.

Strep tests and ear infection exams run something like $80 at Little Clinics (you can see their price schedules here.) I know LOTS of parents with small kids who swear by the places as a preferable alternative to going to see the pediatrician for small stuff.

And it's all walk-in based with services provided by nurse practitioners. Prescriptions can be filled on-site.

Its actually a very nice business model that aligns more with a pharmacy, and is going to provide much larger returns, than tobacco. Cigs/tobacco will still be available at the local 7-11.
