In light of recent mass shootings – primarily in so-called ‘gun-free zones’ – that have left dozens dead and even more injured, Americans have become increasingly divided regarding how such tragedies might be avoided in the future.
While some have concluded that stricter gun control laws would keep citizens safe by limiting legal access to firearms, plenty of others recognize that a well-armed populace can act as a deterrent to would-be violent criminals.
As federal authorities consider imposing legislation that would make the ownership of certain weapons illegal, local law enforcement officials are speaking out against such proposals. One such voice is Mike Lewis, who serves as sheriff of Wicomico County, Md.
During a recent interview, he firmly denounced the federal government’s intrusion into his constituents’ ability to own and carry legally owned weapons.
“I’ve been holding a gun in my hand since I was probably old enough to walk,” he said, explaining that he never leaves home without a firearm.
Many in the hunting community lead a similar lifestyle, he explained.
“Our guns hurt no one, literally no one, if they’re left alone,” he said.

While he conceded that a gun in the hand of a “bad person” could lead to trouble, he said that the best way to deal with that potential threat is to make sure convicted felons are not allowed to own such weapons.
“But we do not need to strip law-abiding citizens of their Second Amendment right to bear arms,” he said. “That I get upset over; I really do.”
In response to the possibility that D.C. legislators will impose gun control in his neck of the woods, Lewis had some definitive words.
He said that he made a “vow and commitment” that as long as he holds his current position, he “will not allow the federal government to come in here and strip [his] citizens of their right to bear arms.”
Should such an effort make its way into his county, he predicts a large-scale rebellion.
“If they attempt to do that, it will be an all-out civil war,” he concluded. “No question about it.”

A great many other Americans echo that sentiment. I don’t think the Feds fathom the depth of the hidden resistance.
Maybe we can get Sheriff Joe’s Posse and Glenn Beck to combine their reports?

Is it true that the Sheriff is the only law enforcement agency actually mentioned in The Constitution?
Tell that to “Max Velocity”. While his redoubt is in WV, he has ties to western MD.

Because ‘his citizens’ are the people living in his County, where he is the top law enforcement officer.
Nope. Not in the FEDERAL Constitution, but, the role of Sheriff is a position created by *state* legislators or the general assemblies within the individual state.
Might even be in the Constitution of one to several States. Dunno.

Good. That means they won't be prepared for it.
But he didn’t say ‘his citizens’. He said ‘citizens’... meaning he will defend the rights of all citizens.
The author is trying to change the meaning.
Another civil war would be ugly, and I hope we can avoid it. I hope the gun grabbing talk is just rhetoric and the far left isn’t stupid enough to actually attempt something that will certainly provoke the natural consequences of that illegal action.
Knowing there are Men like this sheriff out there makes me smile and feel safe.
MD is like most other blue states. The highly-populated urban centers overwhelm the votes of the otherwise “normal” people elsewhere in the state. Twenty-three counties in MD — all but 5 voted Repub in ‘08 & ‘12. Throw in Baltimore City (of course) to clinch it for the Left every time.
