For two millennia, great artists set the standard for beauty. Now those standards are gone. Modern Art is a competition between the ugly and the twisted; the most shocking wins. What happened? How did the beautiful come to be reviled and bad taste come to be celebrated? Renowned artist Robert Florczak explains the history and the mystery behind this change and how it can be stopped and even reversed.

After the dawn of photography, “fine” artists stepped back from attempting to be realist in their portrayal of subject matter.

Yet photographers who wanted to be accepted as “artists” had to use tricks (to haze the photo) to present “pictorialist” works.

The American illustrator movement (who largely found work in publishing whether it be book, magazine, or advertising illustration) was rejected by the art world as being crass/consumerist/and about money. As if Andy Warhol or Salvador Dali weren’t interested in how much money their works were bringing in.

Initially the dada movement, readymade objects, and all that were conceived as “anti-art” but it has since become the dominant ART form recognized by galleries and institutions.

Pablo Picasso, upon visiting and viewing the drawings at the Caves of Lascaux, commented, “We have learned nothing”.

There is an incredible amount of rage within the constraints of more "traditional" artistry. I personally tend toward minimalism which is why I love foggy days for photography.

Other times I go other ways. This picture was a crappy photo I took and later heavily manipulated it into something I liked. I printed and framed it for myself but my neighbor ended up buying it for his hunting/getaway cabin up north.

And poetry.

To me, nothing in the arts is worse than modern poetry, especially slam poetry and spoken word, self-indulgent crap delivered with an affected cadence. Horrible.

According to a friend who is a professor at a very prestigious art school, modern art is so bad because:

1. The really good students are picked up by advertising companies and video game companies. Most of the highest quality art of the last 60 years has been to sell something.

2. While art has always had a political element, politics now trumps quality art. Previously, quality of art came first.

3. Related to No.2, art has always had gays, but now gay trumps art.

“When I am alone with myself, I have not the courage to think of myself as an artist in the great and ancient sense of the term.
Giotto, Titan, Rembrandt and Goya were great painters. I am only a public entertainer who has understood his times and has exhausted, as best he could, the imbecility, the vanity, the cupidity of his contemporaries.
Mine is a bitter confession, more painful than it may appear, but it has the merit of being sincere.”—Pablo Picasso

Excellent, concise, spot-on video! My thoughts exactly. I have long said that YES, there IS such a thing as bad art, and no one need be intimidated by the art snob community into believing they don’t know enough about art to make a judgment call.

The proliferation of bad art in America coincides with the leftist “progressive” revolution that began around the turn of the last century. The gist and foundation of all of it is REBELLION.

Art is used for investment and tax purposes. All that matters is that it is rare, verifiable, and created by someone famous (at least in the art community). The actual art can be pure crap. It doesn’t matter.

O Me! O Life! By Walt Whitman

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring, Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish, Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d, Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me, Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined, The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here—that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

Many people are trying to contribute a verse through their art and many more of us stand on some high moral ground and proclaim it not worthy, the artist and the art critic, the eternal struggle goes on.

A while back I read an article about how to make money off art and photography.

Basically it said to hang around gay people and photograph them doing gay things and then show it off to liberals so they will get your name out there.

My attitude is to do what I like and if others like it too, they’ll pay for it.

This crap has been going on for years. I don’t know that it is a Communist plot but my thought has always been:

If the art is more dependent on imagination and shock value than skill to create. It isn’t art. It is trash.

I do not dispute that those were among their goals, but I suspect that your items are not from an actual list compiled by the leftists, as I doubt they would describe their “superior” cultural items with all of those negative adjectives. Your list reads like something from one of those multi-forwarded emails.

On a recent vacation, I had the misfortune of visiting Goggleworks in Reading, PA. I was astounded by the quantity of garbage masquerading as art.

http://www.goggleworks.org

The stuff that shows up on a quick peek at the website is not bad, but most of what I saw on display and for sale was disgusting, while some of it was just laughable.
