A group of around 30 protesters lined up outside of the Mirage today to call on the casino to release the dolphins from Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat.
Decked out with colorful signs, activists gathered at around 5 p.m. near the casino’s main entrance off of Las Vegas Boulevard to support the Free the Mojave Dolphins campaign, which argues that keeping the dolphins at the resort amounts to trapping them unnaturally in the middle of the Mojave desert.

They won’t get very far if you release them into the desert.
If I’m not mistaken, those very same Dolphins are the ones that were taken out with the tide during Katrina in Mississippi, and even though raised in captivity, SURVIVED out to sea for months on end until someone went looking for them.
I thought I read about this in this past Sunday’s paper?
I’m pretty sure I read that they ended up in Vegas.
All that aside, I REALLY hate Zoos and Circuses and Animal ‘Shows’ of any stripe - though I, myself, am not above making my dog ‘beg’ for a treat. ;)
Much of this protest seems focused on a promoting a movie about it and the killing of dolphins for food (in addition to the captivity).
They say that it is wrong to put them in the desert but they also say that it is wrong to put them in a tank “the size of a bathtub” anywhere.
There are some animal species that are endangered and would not continue to exist if not for captivity. This does not defend the practice and treatment, but the wild is not a safe or friendly place either.

I agree. I consider zoos inhumane. I believe there should be much fewer zoos in the USA and around the world. We should have maybe 6 - 8 in the entire nation and they should be at major attractions — Disney area, the San Diego zoo, etc., .....
And I would prefer the animals kept there be animals that were rescued if there are not other alternatives.
Knew the head veterinarian for a Sea World. The “touch the dolphin” tank occupants suffered from stress ulcers from a-hole hewmans lunging out at them to touch them as they swam by. The vet had to give them prescription Tagamet anti-ulcer medication. Porpoises are quite intelligent and subject to these kinds of injuries under stress.
Now a touch the shark tank? I asked him if sharks ever got ulcers, and he said, no-— not even cancer. They are too mean to get anything but...shot.

Thank you for keeping things in context. These are cute mammals with fins, but they don't hold any more significance than beef cattle. On a brighter note, let's just be glad they aren't part of the casino buffet menu.
The dolphins were reported to say “so long and thanks for all the fish”.
I don’t have a problem with this one.
It isn’t like dolphins have to be held captive to preserve the species.
This is because we think they smile.
Dolphins in nature roam hundreds and thousands of miles and speak to each other extensively.
I have no interest in seeing what is basically lions in old Bugs Bunny cartoons.
Even the “dolphin encounters” at resorts stress the dolphins extremely.
It just seems cruel.

So cruelty is cool with you. Rooster fighting, dog fighting, puppy mills, crush videos, what does it matter, right?
Earlier I enjoyed a hearty meal of Bumblebee white albacore chunk dolphin.
Chop up some celery, green onion, a dab of Hellmans on lightly toasted baguette, squirt of lemon, sea salt, ground pepper, mix with dolphins/tuna, whatever, serve on iceberg lettuce ...

So you prefer that endangered animals be eaten alive in the wild as opposed to dying of old age at the San Diego Zoo or Sea World?
"Is your tuna dolphin free?" I asked.
"of course, Sir" was the response
"Well, never mind then, I liked Tuna better with a little dolphin in it"

I was at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City many years ago talking to a very cute WOF Public Relations gal, with my cousins and I all trying to impress ....
She was wearing a classy blazer with “Public Relations” in black letters across a brass badge. I pointed out the ‘l’ in “Public” was missing—and it was—but she wasn’t impressed.
I love going to the zoo. We have one 40 minutes away. I like to visit the animals. If it weren’t for local zoos some people might never see a lion, gorilla, or giraffe their whole lives. That said, I grew up with it being a “natural” thing to do and only recently became cognizant of the injustice of it all to some of the animals there, got mixed feelings now...but as long as they are there I will continue to visit.

I love going to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and after a long day admiring sea life having a tuna salad, fried shrimp and clam chowder. ..
Flipper always seemed happy. And dolphins in the ocean will come up to boats and seem to like people. When Ocean World was open in Ft. Lauderdale, I took my kids and after one of the dolphin shows, we stayed and played with the dolphins, throwing the rings. They would get them and bring them back to us, even though we didn’t have any fish to give them. I love dolphins and suppose it is selfishness on my part to want to be able to see them up close.
Recently I was in Charleston, SC and we went on a tour boat in the bay and saw several. They didn’t come too near the boat but close enough for us to see them. They seem to enjoy entertaining people.
Not at all. I was just wondering why people would protest THESE particular dolphins that survived against the odds!
