I gotta say, the Phils lineup woulda been even better if they could have put Mike Schmidt in the lineup in two places!!
I became a Phillies fan about when Ritchie Ashburn began his MLB career, and although as an adult I lived in Baltimore for 5 years (and only really became an Oriole fan when they obtained Frank Robinson from Cincinnati) and then on Long Island for four decades and followed the Mets, the Phillies were my first love. I knew that for sure the year the Mets were about to clinch the pennant, and they were playing in Philadelphia and for some reason the game wasn’t televised so I tuned in on the radio to hear the Mets clinch. But the first time a Phillie got a hit, I found myself saying, “Go for two!” to the radio. LOL.
So I didn’t really follow the Phillies except from afar during the Mike Schmidt era. Now I’m in central PA, and can see the Pirates or the Phillies. And although my wife is from western Pa and tends to follow the Steelers, she picked up the Eagles and Phillies while we were near Philly for the past 4 years. Of course it helped that the Phillies were good 3 and 4 years ago . . .

Now, not so much. Past two years they had terrible bull pen troubles, but now with Giles and Dekeman to set up for Pappelbon, suddenly seeing the bull pen pitch three “perfect” innings isn’t particularly surprising. By no means a sure thing, of course, but hardly a shock. Now if they could add 2 bats to the middle of their lineup, they’d be back in business.

I hope they got someone useful for Mayberry; he’s a pretty good fielder in the outfield or first base, and has his moments as a hitter but just has never been consistent. The Phils need a consistent bat in left field, 3rd base, and 1st base. Which tells you they don’t have a whole world of pop in their lineup. And they don’t have Cliff Lee, and may never have him back.

“Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric baseball community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic. You should always use more than one metric at a time when evaluating players, but WAR is pretty darn all-inclusive and provides a handy reference point. WAR basically looks at a player and asks the question, “If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a minor leaguer or someone from their bench, how much value would the team be losing?” This value is expressed in a wins format, so we could say that Player X is worth +6.3 wins to their team while Player Y is only worth +3.5 wins.”

“So. If a visiting pitcher lost due to runs scoring on walks or errors, therefore not having to pitch the bottom of the ninth, is it a no- hitter?”

Nope:

“LOS ANGELES (ESPN.com news services) — Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo combined to no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night — and it still wasn’t good enough for the Los Angeles Angels.

The Dodgers became the fifth team in modern major league history to win a game in which they didn’t get a hit, defeating the Angels 1-0. Weaver’s error on a slow roller led to an unearned run by the Dodgers in the fifth.

Weaver downplayed the fact the Angels lost without giving up a hit.

“Any loss, no matter what, is tough,” he said. “I’m sure you guys are going to eat this up a lot more than I am. I don’t call it a no-hitter for me. I only went six innings.”

The Dodgers’ Joe Torre thought it might’ve been his weirdest win as a manager.

“I’d really have to reach down, and I don’t really remember too much, but that’s about as bizarre as you can get,” he said.

With the Angels trailing in the interleague game at Dodger Stadium, Weaver was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning after throwing 97 pitches. Arredondo pitched the next two innings.

Because the Dodgers didn’t have to bat in the ninth, the game doesn’t qualify as a no-hitter. It was only the fifth such game since 1900, and first since Boston’s Matt Young in 1992, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.”

Why It Wasn’t A No-No

According to MLB rules: An official no-hit game occurs when a pitcher (or pitchers) allows no hits during the entire course of a game, which consists of at least nine innings. In a no-hit game, a batter may reach base via a walk, an error, a hit by pitch, a passed ball or wild pitch on strike three, or catcher’s interference.

No-Hit Losers

The Angels entered a unique group when they lost to the Dodgers on Saturday. Only five times in the history of modern baseball has a pitcher or pitchers held a team hitless and lost. Here’s a rundown:
Allowed 0 Hits, Lost Game Year Pitcher(s) Team
2008 J. Weaver, J. Arredondo Angels
1992 Matt Young Red Sox
1990 Andy Hawkins Yankees
1967 S. Barber, S. Miller Orioles
1964 Ken Johnson Colt .45’s

It doesn’t count as a no-hitter for the visitors because the home team doesn’t have to bat in the bottom of the ninth. A no-hitter requires nine innings of pitching to be official. It might be different if the game went into extra innings.

Plus Pete Kozma is back and so far, in 2 games, he’s 2 for 4 and has made some great plays at second base.

Thanks. Gee, it sounds subjective! Hockey has that stat about goals for/against your team when you are on the ice that evens out all the others, but it just doesn’t seem doable in baseball. They use something similar in basketball too.

They are finally playing up to their potential. Adams in a bit of a batting slump but that will pass quickly. I’m lovin’ all of it.
