The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Happy hot Sunday Labor Day weekend fellow listeners. I hope you’re able to carve out some time and rest for yourself these days.

A lineup of interesting, mostly detective, mystery shows tonight. Not sure about the Aldrich Family (OTR doesn’t do well with family shows)...but Casey, Crime Photographer, Under Arrest look good...Mercury Summer Theater should be fun...and closing things with Mystery House seems like a great ending.

How’s things where you are? Is there meat roasting over fire?

Hennnnnnnnnry! Henry Aldrich! Reminds me of the Archie comic books I grew up with. I too love the detective shows, but the Aldrich Family is also keen.

Hey. So it’s a lesser known, over the top comedy family show?

Hi, Vision! I just got to the computer. Been doing hard-core yard work since about 10 this morning. Wow, am I worn out! Didn’t get the synopsis list done either. But the lineup looks good.

I’m wondering if the Mercury offering is the “same” as the one Welles voiced for Suspense?

Yes, I’m off, but Keith’s not. I’ll probably do the housework and laundry I didn’t do today, because of the yard work.

Are you off, too? What’s on the grill? Keith’s doing some ribs.

I don’t understand why family based programs are so bad. Maybe writers were single Hollywood types. Maybe they were trying to appeal to kids and adults.

Give Keith my condolences.

I’m off. Been doing projects. Did some pit beef yesterday and some wings this afternoon before the rain.

What were you working on today?

I guess it is.

From Wiki:

The Hitch-Hiker is a radio play written by Lucille Fletcher. It was first presented on the November 17, 1941, broadcast of the Orson Welles Show on CBS Radio, featuring a score written and conducted by Bernard Herrmann, Fletcher's first husband. Welles performed The Hitch-Hiker four times on radio, and the play was adapted for a notable 1960 episode of the television series The Twilight Zone.

We have this giant back yard, and it is loaded around the perimeter inside the fence with various bushes and trees, also monkey ball vines. I trimmed privets, spirea, cherry laurel, azalea, etc., and pulled up the vines, ran the weed eater, cleaned up the mess—made a massive pile of debris—and mowed the back yard—got too much sun, too. It could’ve been worse, though. We have two gigantic live oaks in the back that kept me shade and filtered sun where I was working. I’m worn out!

My mom was a big Henry Aldrich fan when she was a kid — I heard “Henry! Henry Aldrich!” “Coming Mother.” all the time growing up.

Hi, Brian! Happy Labor Day (even though it’s a communist holiday, what the heck?)!
