Rubio Flips Again on Immigration
Powerline Blog ^ | August 29, 2014 | Paul Mirengoff

Posted on 08/29/2014 12:58:24 PM PDT by right-wing agnostic

Sen. Marco Rubio says that if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid brought the immigration reform bill that Rubio sponsored last year to the floor for a vote now, he would vote against it. Rubio explained that passing his immigration bill wouldn’t be productive, and thus the vote would only be for show.

But if “unproductive” and “show votes” automatically deserved a “no,” our solons would rarely vote “yes.” If his bill was meritorious last year, as Rubio believed, it is meritorious now, and should be treated accordingly.

Rubio also claims that he doesn’t regret his support for his immigration reform bill last year, but it’s pretty clear that he does. After all, that bill turned out (thankfully) to be unproductive.

More importantly, if Rubio hadn’t supported amnesty-style comprehensive immigration reform, he would probably be the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination. At a minimum, he wouldn’t feel compelled to fast talk his way out of the political damage he inflicted on himself by leading the charge for amnesty.

Amnesty-style comprehensive reform isn’t the only immigration issue as to which Rubio is flipping. There is also the matter of “dreamers.”

Anyone who believes or votes Marco Rubio at this point is an American-hating leftist. He threw away a once-promising political career by aligning himself with Chuck Schumer, John McCain, Lindsey Graham et. al against the American people, showing support American-despising illegal aliens. Marco Rubio's political career with not recover from his aligning with these American-hating leftists. He's just too stupid to realize that his political career in the conservative movement is finished regardless of how he tries to re-brand himself at this point./rwa

I was NOT SAYING that anyone who voted for Marco Rubio in 2010 is an American-hating leftist. Rather, anyone who trusts or votes for him since his amnesty sellout last year both stupid and an American-hating leftist. I apologize if that wasn’t clear in my original comment. From this point foward, Marco Rubio should be politically toxic and dead to anyone calling themselves conservatives./rwa

Having suggested how Conservatives should deal with Senator Rubio, when he came out for the Immigration Bill, (Whither American Conservatism), I am disposed to wait and see how he responds to similar issues, before writing him off.

That this is an awkward moment for him, is clear. But he has been sound enough on some other issues, that it is possible that he has learned the right lesson--possible.

I trust Rubio about as much as I trust Bill Clinton—”it depends on what the definition of ‘is’ is.”

Seriously, how anyone calling themselves a 'representative' could be so oblivious to what they people they claim to represent want is a mystery.

And more, be such a willing tool for some really, really bad people.

Whatta fool.

Per some reports, Rubio banked around $3 million 'from big donors for his reelection' soon after the Gang of 8 bill passed the Senate.

Too little too late Marco. I resigned from the GOP after his vote last year and wrote him a letter telling him exactly why and how disappointed I was in him. He thought he would be annointed by the GOPe as the next nominee by sponsoring that bill...and now he has discovered that all he did was throw away his base. I’m not buying any of his drivel.

It’s also possible that Rubio will have figured out how to lie to us.

We already learned what his instincts are when he came out for amnesty. I wouldn’t believe him if he said he’s changed his mind.

You may be right. But as I recall the context of his original flip, it was a result of pressure from his mother--as herself an immigrant--to be more sensitive to the immigrant position.

That certainly did not morally justify his lining up with those who seek, quite deliberately, to remake America. The moral duty--and one would certainly hope the honest inclination--of any family benefiting from American hospitality, in any form, and then becoming citizens, should be to put the interests of preserving the character of America ahead of whatever sympathies they may have for any foreign people.

I do not now, and never have excused those who arrogantly spit in our face. But the pressure on Rubio reflected the way the Left has played this game, throughout our lifetimes. They twist, what clearly should be the priorities of one sworn to uphold our Constitution, after benefiting from our generosity, into a feeling of guilt for that benefit, and a duty to bestow the benefits, they have received, on others. Given the smoke and mirror antics of much of Academia & the Press, they simply do not see that those "benefits" are in effect at the expense, not so much of them, but of those who once benefited them.

The answer, in my opinion is to directly confront the obvious moral error in this, which encompasses elements both of arrogance & betrayal of trust, as well as actual ingratitude. (It also undermines the very reasons that American citizenship is, or was, desirable.
