Louis van Gaal must share the blame for Manchester United horror show
theguardian.com ^ | Aug 28th 2014 | Paul Wilson

Even at this early stage of the season the car crash that was Louis van Gaal’s first entanglement with the Capital One Cup seems likely to be one of those stand out matches, the sort of set piece horror show that will feature in clip compilations and football documentaries for decades to come. Heck, people like me are likely to be writing about it for years to come, so imagine my disappointment at not getting to witness the carnage first hand, or even watch it on television, but being forced to follow the action through a Steve Claridge co-commentary on Radio 5 Live.

Unlike the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United tactics’ playbook does not appear to have the phrase “Don’t Panic” written in large, friendly letters on the cover.

The football world could hardly keep a straight face as players, clubs and pundits took to Twitter to laugh at their latest humiliation.

Well, that makes sense, at least. Like they say though, “they just got beat.” Each of those goals appeared to be well earned. The wonder to me is how seldom anyone is able to do it.

Manchester United's Premier League millionaires humiliated 4-0 by League One minnows MK Dons
In less than 50 days, Louis van Gaal has completed the bruising tumble from a World Cup semi-final in the concrete jungle of Sao Paulo to a public humiliation amid the concrete cows of Milton Keynes.

It is what Andre Villas-Boas might call a ‘negative spiral’. On a day when Manchester United spirits ought to have been lifted by the arrival of Angel di Maria for a British record transfer fee, they instead went crashing out of the Capital One Cup.

The performance was feeble and the result was perhaps United’s worst since York City won at Old Trafford in this competition, nearly 20 years ago.

Van Gaal’s first campaign is unravelling at breathtaking speed, although he made every effort to suggest he was unaffected — even unsurprised — by the pummelling.

Watched it. Man U looked lost. Even with Di Maria they are probably going to struggle. They need to make several more moves in the transfer market, but don’t have much time to do it. At the same time, their competition in the Premiere League have improved themselves.

To be honest, I have always liked van Gaal as a person and hope it won’t end too badly there for him. Same with Magath and Fulham…

www.manutd.com - Van Gaal: United fans have to believe
“It’s difficult for the fans, I know that, but they have to believe in our philosophy,” Van Gaal told MUTV. “At the end, they can judge, but not now. I hope they shall maintain their confidence in the club and in our philosophy because that philosophy takes time. We are building up a team which you can’t make in one month, even one year.”

wsj.com - Early-Season Woes May Worry Manchester United Investors
For fans and investors accustomed to almost constant success, English soccer club Manchester United is becoming a very different proposition after its worst start to a new season in two decades.

The club, which claims to have 659 million followers worldwide has won the English Premier League more than any other team. It struggled for form last season, its first since legendary manager Alex Ferguson stood down, eventually sacking his replacement David Moyes and appointing new manager Louis van Gaal. But Mr. van Gaal’s side has failed to win a game this season. On Tuesday his team suffered a humiliating 4-0 thrashing by lower-league MK Dons.

van Gaal is one of those guys who always lands on his feet, partly because he is insane.

You can’t keep an insane man down,

On the one hand, ManU has a real problem with injuries right now, but that excuse only goes so far. The new 3-5-2 system isn’t working, and instead of shoring up the suspect defense, they spend insane amounts on acquiring players who fill positions they already have covered up front.

But worse, they aren’t showing any energy or enthusiasm. They have looked flat, played flat, and even before the embarrassment to MC Dons, they went loss-draw in their opening EPL games. They don’t even have the excuse of European league play causing them to be tired or distracted.
