Interesting phone call I just received
August 23, 2014 | Me

Posted on 08/23/2014 7:32:59 AM PDT by The Working Man

I just received an interesting phone call from "Credit Card Services". It wasn't the call that was interesting it was that they used my OWN phone number as the identifying number on the Caller ID.

I'm not sure where this falls in the "legality' scale but from my own point of view if this company can use my own phone number on the caller ID to identify themselves then they or anyone else can use it also to conduct business that is truly illegal. Try explaining to the authorities that you didn't order that kilogram of 'drugs' when your home phone number is clearly the one that was used in making the order as confirmed by 'Caller ID'.

SO what do 'you' think?

“Sometimes the calls from “credit card services” are legit. My credit card company is very cautious and they’ll call to confirm unusual activity.”

Same here, and they’ve (Barclay’s) caught some doosies. BUT...

If they leave a message, I don’t call back on the number they leave in the message. I start with the 800 number on the back of the charge card itself. Takes longer, but I start asking for the fraud detection unit...gets me there eventually.

IF I answer the phone and talk to a real person, I get a reference number and tell them I’ll call back...and call back with the number on the back of the card.

One thing...I ALWAYS thank them for looking out for me (even if it is a nuisance to deal with).

We also get online/email notification when something strange happens account-wise. Helps to confirm it’s a real deal call.

And blow a whistle into the phone before you hang up. . .and laugh when you hear them scream.

Blows out their ear. . .scum.

The beauty of caller ID is I NEVER answer my cell phone unless I KNOW the caller...(and even some I do know I don't answer)☺...If it's important they can leave a message

Here’s a youtube video on the eventvwr scam. Their goal is to lead you through several steps where at the end you give them remote access to your PC.

They will direct you to a specific website, at which point they will hijack your computer and hold it for ransom if you don’t pay them $$$.

The same thing happened to me about a week ago! My phone number calling me! I answered it (I have caller ID), and it’s a credit card scam. Once I figured that out, takes about 10 seconds, I hung up, LOL.

They call me once or twice a week - relentlessly spamming me.

I’ve tried asking them to not call and to take me off their list. They just hang up.

This should be and probably is illegal.

“I let them know in no uncertain terms that they are thieves and that I will report them.”

Even if you do, the numbers are spoofed and they don’t care and the FCC really doesn’t care either. Ever hear of a telemarketing company being prosecuting?

“(I don’t but perhaps it takes me off their lists)”

Not really. Answering verifies your number IS live and a person answers. . .and they sell your number to another telemarketing company and the cycle continues.

I turned off my answering machine, turned off the ringer and after a couple of weeks the number of telemarketing calls has fallen off to almost nothing because the computer only hears a phone ring and ring and ring (with no answer) meaning the number is un-monitored or non-working or incorrect.

It happened to me also, I was like, oh, I’m calling myself..didn’t answer it though. Just re-signed up on the do not call registry, that should take a month to take affect but I doubt the damn robo calls will ever stop.

I have answered a couple of the calls and as I start to tell them, in my most stern voice, to remove my number from their calling list they just hang up on me.

I used to just ask the solicitors if they could hold on for a minute and then lay the phone down and walk away. It really messes up their scheduling and they are so stupid they will hold on for a long time. Usually they never call back.

My husband had a problem with his computer, caused by Google Chrome installing itself & he couldn’t get rid of it. He used a company called Omnitech for help. Finally gave up & bought a new computer (it was about time anyway). Well, this company calls us almost daily saying that our computer is sending out some sort of distress message & they want us to give them access so they can ‘fix’ it. But that computer is gone now. I wish that company could be so easily turned off!

I tell them that the person they want to speak to is DEAD,

and then I start screaming and sobbing at the top of my lungs.

They don’t call back.

Scam. Credit cards. Auto warranty expires. And now topical pain relievers.
All from numbers that are out of service

Scams.

Many of these calls originate in Florida...

I keep a police whistle handy when “Rachel” calls.
