Try to think about it a bit differently, and maybe these folks won’t bother you so much.

Be happy for them that they have had no direct experience with mental illness, and recognize that they spout nothing but their ignorance. I would not wish up close and personal with mental illness on anyone.

If they knew better, they would not say what they say. I hope they all live the rest of their lives blissfully ignorant.

I can totally understand. Being a person was at that point as an 18 year old, I would certainly not want anyone to think I was a coward. I was very messed up like all the people at that point.

But in defense of the point, being called selfish is what walked me back, because I realized that that type of act does not happen in a void.

This is the type of hard talk that should happen between a therapist and their patient in a controlled environment. Grieving families of a suicide will not want to hear this after the fact.

, but many do seem to be trying to hurt a loved one who somehow didn't love them enough.

However, there are those who do it because they actually believe they are a burden to their loved ones, and suicide will relive that burden.

Of course, it's delusional, but that is how they think.

suicide will relive that burden.

Should be, "suicide will RELIEVE that burden."

So very touched by your post, and extending my condolences for your loss.

Having witnessed extreme depression up close, and knowing my point of reference is narrow, I too find it sickening to read comments that are glib and rather idiotic.

It was explained to me this way; for a person suffering RW did, it is akin to never being able to get clear reception on a radio. It’s all static and the brain never gets a rest.
Found that analogy helpful in understanding the tortured pain they may be dealing with, daily.

My god...well hit me with a hammer.

I found an honest thread on Robin Williams.

All opinions are respected. I personally like to see open discussion. I didn’t read ‘all’ the comments; I hope they were respectful of others as well.

I have very, very strong feelings about this that I will not share here; getting flamed or “the zot” won’t change my opinion . But, again, it’s nice to see an honest thread.

I do believe there are reasons to commit suicide which can be of such appallingly compelling or debilitating severity that one literally cannot resist the temptation to do it. In other words, it’s conceivable to me that one, in effect, may reach a point where one no longer has a choice in the matter. It’s hard for me to feel anything but pity for the poor suicide who finds himself in that boat!

One thing I’ve also heard a lot from friends of people who commit suicide, is that in the days before, they actually seemed happier than normal, the suggestion being that they knew in their minds soon all of their troubles would soon be over.

Rollins comes from a very dark place
Some of his books are inspirational and damned good
Some are as depressing as hell

I trust our friend Socrates as neither glib nor idiotic. What will you say, it’s OK? No, you let them know it is wrong. Clearly wrong.

Me, too. I’ve heard that as well. I’ve never seen it in my quite limited layman’s experience (though I’ve had waaaay too much of that), only a constant depression in the person right up to the end. What’s left for me is always the profound sense of loss and sense of missed opportunity... I might have been able to help but didn’t. Stupid me, I never seem to realize how much I liked the person until he’s gone.

My brother’s best friend committed suicide in junior high school by jumping off a fifty-foot high train trestle in front of a speeding freight train. That train was going 70mph. How much do you have to hate yourself (or your parents?) to do that? I knew that location well, one of the most terrifying spots in town. The kid’s father was our Sunday school teacher. Nobody ever figured out why the kid did it.

Not interested in your narrow ideas.

Good luck to you.

No, the question was, what do you tell them, that it’s OK? But clearly it is wrong.

Most parents could not stand never seeing their children again. I agree: Suicide, while irrational, just seems to say, “I don’t give a sh*t!”

Where did I ever suggest it was ‘right’?

Please, I respect that our thoughts on this differ, I would prefer to leave it that way. Truly not a topic I am willing to debate. But thank you, and honestly, best of luck.
