Porn is ‘pervasive’ in our lives, sex-ed pressures us into promiscuity: teens in UK poll

A poll of 18-year-old UK teens conducted by the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR) found that a large majority of both boys and girls believe that easy access to online porn puts pressure on them to look and act in imitation of what porn portrays.

They also complained that sex education often presents promiscuity as normal, putting additional pressure on them to become sexually active before they might otherwise.

"This new polling data shows that pornographic images are pervasive in teenagers' lives and that young women in particular are acutely conscious of how damaging they can be," said Dalia Ben-Galim, associate director of the IPPR, in media statements.

"The images and the type of pornography that young people can access quite readily is much more explicit and more violent than young people have been able to access in the past," she said.

The poll of 500 teens found that 77 percent of teen girls agreed that "pornography has led to pressure on girls and young women to look a certain way," while 75 percent said that porn pressures then to "act" a certain way.

Eighty percent of the 18 year olds said that it was "too easy for young people to accidentally see pornography online."

Seven out of 10 said that "accessing pornography was seen as typical" while they were at school, while almost half (46 percent) said "sending sexual or naked photos or videos is part of everyday life for teenagers."

Seventy-two percent said internet porn "leads to unrealistic attitudes to sex," while 67 percent agreed that porn "can become addictive," and 70 percent said pornography encourages society to view women as sex objects.

"The perception is that young people have embraced all of this technology and this is just the way they conduct their relationships and the way they live now," Ben-Galims said. “Although that part is true, what was surprising is how uncomfortable so many young people feel with the impact of that technology and how easy it is to access pornography, and that is feeding into the their attitudes."

Ben-Galim said it was evident that pornographic imagery has skewed what some young people see as normal in relationships.

"It is frightening if that is becoming the spectrum of what is normal and expected," she said.

Part of the survey asked the 18 year olds about their experience with sex education.

Many criticized the sex education lessons they had received at school for not doing enough to discourage them from becoming sexually active, and for not adequately addressing online pornography.

One 18-year-old girl responded to the poll question about her sex-ed experience: "I always felt pressured by teachers, like, 'sex is normal, just be safe OK' when actually I wasn't interested in having sex at the time and was happy to wait for the right person.

"I don't think sex should be taught as 'the norm'. I think people should be made to feel comfortable and teachers should say, 'you should wait, the law states 16, don't be pressured'." Advertisement

Many responses to this question lamented the lack of warning about the false images portrayed by pornography, and asked for "a complete ban on porn access."

"Teaching kids that pornography is almost fantasy is a good idea as well, the amount of plastic surgery, and drugs (viagra, enemas etc.) that are given to the people in the videos should be explained, so that there are no false images in their minds whilst growing up," one respondent wrote.

The polling data used in the report is available here.

The IPPR survey report titled "Young people, sex and relationships: The new norms" will be published online on August 27.

During my child’s Christening the priest talked about the light of innocence in children’s eyes, and how it is our duty to help prevent that light from being put out. I think this is very important. It’s not that we can or should try to keep them from seeing reality in the world. It’s that we need to be vigilant in their lives, emphasize that there is a right and a wrong, and not just a fuzzy middle, and to help them to make the right choices in this tough world we live in. Innocence and ignorance are two different things. One can know the world, but choose to not be a part of the ugly part of it.

For clarification, I certainly wouldn’t hold myself up as a role model. There are so many things I would do differently if I had the chance again. But we can do better with our kids, and I can’t think of a more important task.

Modern womens Lib is nothing more Secular Humanism with a Feminist agit-prop slant...

All it did was to teach women that they are “animals” like the rest of the animals and did nothing to expect higher order behavior...

When you equate humans (Men or women) to animals you end up equating them to mere objects for use and consumption and not the divine humans who belong ABOVE the animals...
