Vanity: Need help choosing home invasion shotgun

I carry concealed a nice glock .40. Fits female hand great, but want a short barrel home invasion shotgun loaded for bear. Any recommendations on a reliable, relatively light-weighted weapon? Brand? Model? Thanks!

True. But if an intruder breaks into your house and you are forced to shoot him at close range with a shotgun, then you’ve got perp blood & brains all over everything. Mess your house up so bad that you’d have to leave and hire the professional Death Cleaners to come in and scrub the place out. And they ain’t cheap. After all, most people who rely on a shotgun for home defense use heavy-duty buckshot.

I really learned a lot from reading all the posts on this thread. I grew up in a military family and have been exposed to firearms all my life, so I thought I knew a thing or two about guns. But many of the posters here have opened my eyes to facts that I had never even considered.

A Benelli? Those things are extremely expensive. Most working-class Americans ain’t gonna spend that kind of jack on some heat, when there are much cheaper shotguns everywhere that would serve the purpose admirably. A Benelli is a rich man’s toy.

“I had to shoot a .45 ACP indoors once in earnest. I thought someone had kicked me in the head.”

Pales next to the .357 bark!

If you had lived through the trials and tribulations of the M-16 and the little dinky 5.56 in RVN and later, you would remember all the issues with multiple hits on a target, and no stopping them. Hitting bone and getting the slug to tumble was magice, if it happened.

American Rifleman had a recent aticle and the umpteenth redesign of the 5.56 round, after all the reports from grunts hitting muzzies and not getting results.

Homeowners are allowed to use hollowpoint, and darned well should, both for terminal effect and to reduce overpenetration of walls.

I am not an expert, and prefer .45 ACP and 12ga at close range, and .308 at long range.

Everyone else is recommending shotgun brands.

My two cents: Low recoil buckshot. Either low recoil #4 buckshot with 21 pellets or low recoil OO buckshot with 8 pellets. Both moving about 1100 to 1200 feet per second. Less ouch for the shoulder but good impact down range. Federal or Winchester brands.

Have fun shopping for your shotgun!

12 gauge ammo is more ubiquitous. Especially in a prolonged emergency situation. Just a thought.

Thanks. I bought the Mossberg 500, 20 gauge, with 1 oz shells and pistol grip instead of shoulder. I went to range and rented 3 styles. Loved this one and the kick was very doable! I’m still scared of it, but will practice and get comfortable.

I can’t comprehend the world you live in where your guns would all be locked up and unloaded when you are at home if you had a safe.

“No one’s suggested a Benelli?”

I had to check, but my shotgun that I thought might be a Benelli is actually a Beretta. 12ga, semi-auto, 18 1/2 inch bbl riot gun. Very light, and kicks like an absolute mule even with trap/skeet loads.

Do you mind if I ask what you think is a good price for the Remington 870 Express Youth? I saw it at Bass Pro Shops for around $329.

Thanks so much.
