Need Ideas. First Time Alone for Thanksgiving in Many Years, Where to Go?
08.18.14 | chickensoup

Posted on 08/18/2014 5:16:06 PM PDT by Chickensoup

After years and years of hosting Thanksgiving for friends and family, I am on my own this year. My friends are either overseas or have moved out of the area, or have moved to live near their children, and my children are scattered. I have no family. So I am on my own.

I am looking for ideas for something to do on Thanksgiving, some place to go. I am considering Montreal, Asheville, etc. I live in the Northeast, and would have about 2K to spend. I am not fond of large cities, would love to do something fun, and something that would not be considered unusual when done alone. I also realize the issue of how difficult Thanksgiving travel is.

I have been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks. Does anyone one have any ideas? I could use some help here.

Thanks.

Your favorite soup.

Okay. Then stay a week at the Hilton Waikoloa on the Kohala coast, Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Swim with friendly green sea turtles, pet a dolphin, snorkel the lagoon, or just lay out under a covered cabana and read books all day until the sun disappears in a green flash out on the horizon. It’ll be gorgeous and cheap in November, and you will be A-OK going alone.

There’s a sushi bar up the Queens highway a little ways at Mauna Lani that’s as good or better than anything in Honolulu or Osaka Japan.

Ever wanted to see Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park? You haven’t seen all of the best US National Parks unless you’ve seen that one. Until you see Halemaumau Crater with your own eyes, no picture can describe it. I was awed.

Just the drive across the Big Island to the Hilo side in a rental car is worth a vacation, what with the free plunging waterfalls and flora.

I took a cruise one year over Thanksgiving. It was a very nice way to spend the time. There are probably cruises out of NYC even that time of year.

The Greenbrier

Nice place. Gorgeous at that time of year.

That, or Stowe, if it’s snowing.

"I don’t have a friend available to do this with, sadly. So I am looking for an idea where I wont stand out too badly."

Although I have two grown sons who live away from me, I have basically been alone for many years now. I used to travel all over the south alone, back in the days when I was really into the Civil War. Back in 2005, I went to Europe alone. It was my first trip overseas. I was gone for 33 days. I spent a few days in Paris (went to Normandy), and had a whole week in London before climbing on a bus tour to visit the British Isles. The second time I went to London was for 10 days, but I went with a friend. Because she had never been there before, I felt compelled to go with her to some of the same places I had visited on my first trip. I'd never travel with anyone ever again as I prefer traveling alone. I can get up when I want, eat when and where I want, and spend the day doing what I want to do. I'd rather foot the full bill and go it alone, than have to share my vacation time with another person. I even paid an extra $1,000 for that bus tour just so I wouldn't have to share a hotel room with another single traveler during the trip.

We don’t do anything. Read, hike, go to church, etc. Small town America in the Appalachian hills. No worries, no crime, no hurry.

Try Ocracoke Island in NC. Sometimes you have to do nothing to do something. $60 a night in the motel.

Sannibel/ Captiva Islands...they’re attached. Is a perfect place to get away for a few days.

Volunteer to serve Thanksgiving dinner for the Salvation Army or shelter. It is rewarding to give on Thanksgiving.

I’m sure you have friends, tell them your predicament and maybe they’ll invite you over for dinner..........

If not, order yourself a turkey dinner from Boston Market, get yourself your favorite bottle of wine then join me here on FR where we can chat......

If u are considering Montreal, I would very strongly suggest that you instead consider Quebec City, which is totally unlike any city I have been to in North America —cute, quaint Europe, without the high cost and attitude.

I went to Quebec City some years back on business. Wonderful place.

Actually, I never stayed in a B&B in Naples, so have no specific recommendations. But the more I think about Naples, the more I want to hop on a plane. Really, I love it there.

Thank you, good information. Saw that you have traveled quite a bit. If you have any recommendations in the Naples Sarasota area, I would appreciate it.
