Pennsylvania woman fights Ohio rescue over dog
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | Agu 17, 2014 | AP

A Pennsylvania woman's fight to get her dog back from a central Ohio rescue group has turned into a full-fledged legal battle and Internet war.

Veronica Covatch, 53, of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has been trying to get her 5-year-old sheltie back since April, when she said the dog escaped from her friend's back yard in Columbus, Ohio.

Covatch said her dog, Piper, was picked up by Franklin County Animal Control and then turned over to Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue in Columbus in April, even though Covatch said a microchip in her dog would have shown she was the owner.

This is insane -- the dog was microchipped and they still won't give her back to her owner.

This is theft for profit.

“DARE” [local Dobe rescue] does something very similar.

They scour shelters and lost and found ads, snatch up the dogs *even before they go to shelters* and charge insane “adoption fees” for the now “stray” Dobes.

Even the AKC and DPCA has disavowed them yet they continue to flourish.

Worse than all that, healthy, well cared for Dobes commonly deteriorate in their “shelter”, rapidly.

It’s a hustle.

From the article:

Covatch said she's not giving up on Piper, a champion show dog worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Somebody's lookin' for a payday.

I think I heard about this and love rescue groups, however; this is wrong. i side with the owner on this one. Some rescue groups, unfortunately, aren’t who they say are.

Weasel words:

http://www.centralohiosheltierescue.org/1.html

Apparently the owner did not register the chip.

*Most* of my chips, I made sure to register myself even though one vet claimed he did...but had not.

The last chip, another vet registered it instantly, which I discovered only after I tried to register it, myself.

Failing to double check the vet’s protocols should not be an excuse to have your dog stolen.

She needs to have the chipping vet verify ownership.

I have dealt with “breed rescues” and a lot of them are run by liberal do-gooders who think only *they* have the authority to decide who is good enough to own a dog.

How so?

If she posts the dog’s AKC number, we can easily check its title status.

My own untitled dogs are *priceless* to me.

Thanks, forwarded this to my aunt who breeds Shelties. Interesting (and disturbing) if true as reported.

I thought it’s easy to scan for the chip, and read the info, whether or not it’s “registered”

There is a long statement by the Rescue group on their website, right on their front page:

It sounds like a bunch of excuses to me...

Another case of “When Do Gooders Go Bad” which unfortunately they frequently do. My guess is that she is doing this for money or for the sense of power that this sort of thing gives her, probably both. The only upside is that this wacko did not go into government.

It is and they admit the chip is there but say she “registered it after” they got hold of the dog.

I think I’ll *triple* register my dogs’ chips.

It’s only money.

When I adopted my senior yellow lab, animal control chipped her and gave me the paperwork. I tried to change her to my name but since I had renamed the dog it took a phone call to Merck to get her (with her new name) put into my name. My GSD was already in my name but the vet did the paperwork for him.

When the county changed Animal Control providers, the old provider refused to give the chip info to the new animal control provider (they "lost" it), which shows how important for owners to update the info themselves.

We also have an 8 day holding period for strays - and they must be listed with photos on the A/C website for that time.

I have seen this *so* many times.

One slip up and somebody loses their beloved pet and the do-gooders ‘dog-nap’ it and get a substantial “adoption fee” *plus* interim “donations for its care” from chronic supporters until they find a “perfect” home for it.

My dogs are chipped and tattooed so don’t anybody effin’ tell me it’s not my dog.

There would be blood.

The local newsrag listed a Dobermann in the lost/found pets ad and by the time I called about it the next morning, DARE had already come up and snatched it.

No 7 day holding, no time for the owner to find it, just like that...gone into their “rescue” and they will not reunite dogs with owners.

I live in fear of DARE.

If they got hold of mine, somehow, it would take a crime to get them back.

$600 “adoption fees” are not unusual...and they spay/neuter your dog, instantly.

What if somebody’s titled or pointed Dobe got out of its yard?

Inestimable loss of money from stud fees and litters.
