There's a suicide crisis in America
MSN Healthy Living Esquire ^ | 8/15/2014 | Stephen Marche

The group that has shown the highest increase in suicide rates is middle-aged men and women, for whom the number of suicides has risen by a horrifying 28.4 percent in a mere decade. The sharpest increase has been among men in their fifties, for whom the number has risen nearly 50 percent since 1999. Now nearly 30 per 100,000 American men in their fifties kill themselves. Suicides are increasing across the board, from college students to the elderly, but the increases for the middle-aged are shocking.

I wonder if the writer is as concerned about the killing of babies in the womb.

Hmmm. Didn’t some school of medicine publish something about that and saying that 150% of suicides are because of guns? They might as well say that. Somebody posted a list of countries and their suicide rates yesterday on here and we are (the US)pretty far down the list. Maybe they’ll post it again.

Anything happening in .03% of the population is NOT a crisis. Even if the rate has gone up by 25% it’s still basically a statistically insignificant group size.

It's not Suicide by Liberal standards, it's Pro-Choice. Like that star who
wrapped his belt around his neck connected to a door knob. The headline "Choice"
said it all.

Good question - hopefully, he shares our belief that abortion is murder. Which then raises the question - how many women who opt for abortion suffer remorse and commit suicide. That would be an important inquiry.

Well, you wonder what causes people at this age to take their own lives. An inability to come to terms with growing older? The whole mid life crisis thing which some experience? Loss of intimate partners and fears of not finding anyone else due to being less attractive due to aging? Feeling out of place in a world which has changed so much from when they were growing up?

Same here (near the end of that generation.) Either we were enamored by the lure of the age, and succumbed to its deadly infection, or we were vexed beyond hope.

From the article the number of auto fatalities and suicides are about the same. You have to ask how many of those auto ‘accidents’ could not be proven, but were suicide by car?

The problem with an outlier sized group like that is the answer is basically “who knows”. There just aren’t enough of them for a real trend line to be developed. Probably everything you listed, which really boils down to the fairly pat “inability to cope”.

Yes, it is. The NO HOPE legacy of Obama’s Change.

OK, it’s not entirely his fault, but he has made things worse than they might otherwise be.

He’s made it pretty clear that he only cares about 3 groups of people: women who want free birth controls, homosexuals, illegal aliens.

THAT’S IT.

Everybody else can go to the dogs for all that guy cares.

And yeah, Black people, if you don’t fit into one of those 3 groups, it definitely means you too.

Something in the water or air is causing a huge increase in despair throughout the nation. Did it start in Washington DC???

Your cavalier dismissal of this phenomenon because of the .03 percentage shows a callous disregard for our fellow Americans. These are citizens, neighbors, friends and family members who are perhaps unable to cope with the destruction of this Nation.

Many FReepers’ posts reflect how far we have fallen and they are despondent, however, FReepers will never surrender.

It might just possibly have something to do with herr leaders war on the middle class and the lack of jobs and opportunities. I can see how that would cause feelings failure and depression, doom and gloom.

It’s not a callous disregard for anybody. It’s showing an understanding of basic math and English. Yes, on an individual basis, people killing themselves is very sad and unfortunate, and hurts the people around them. But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a statistically insignificant number. Do we have a flu crisis in America? It kills 5 times as many people every year as suicide, but nobody considers that a crisis, because we understand that people get sick and not everybody is going to make it and 150,000 people out of 311 million really isn’t that much.

3/1000 of 1% of the population is just not a crisis. It’s a few thousand sad events.

Samuel Butler says in “The Way of All Flesh” that people kill themselves because of money. This was even mentioned in conjunction with Williams death, and we would think of him as quite well off.

I’m sure this is part of what is driving it among me of this age group.

The Obama legacy?

Not JUST the Obama legacy, but the wrongway Democrats that claim to be the “rulers” of our nation since January of 2007. Whenever Democrats are running things is when this country experiences negative alterations of the norm.

Democrats aggressively pursue their societal engineering with no regard to the humanity it will effect. They so righteously pursue their dreams as though the people, the humanity effected by their perceptions are but widgets to manipulate at will.

Those on the receiving end of the effects of Liberal Democratic manipulations feel a sense of hopelessness when those that are supposed to be representing their interests actually join with the Liberal Democrats.

That hopelessness translates to self destructive action as there is no other way to fight back. The only apparent option other than self destruction is to live in the misery created by the ruling class.

I see that as what is driving many whom have lost so much, and have little faith they will ever be solvent again to their self destructive actions.

It’s called why bother. There are many reasons for such life terminations, but when one is governed to death.......
