ESPN Insider: Suspensions Creating "Minefield" For Shout Show Hosts
Deadspin ^ | August 13, 2014 | Dave McKeena

Education reformers often cite reducing suspensions in our nation's schools as a top priority. Lots of recent studies show that this form of punishment does more harm than good.

They might do well to read some of those studies over at ESPN's Bristol campus, where the lords of discipline are now handing out suspensions at a rate that would make even an old school junior high principal wobble. Pundits tasked with discussing controversial topics on cue—and, above all, inspiring a reaction—are now worried not just about doing their jobs, but about not saying the wrong thing, even if no one knows what exactly that is. According to one ESPN insider, on-air talent at the network are highly aware that they're now navigating a "minefield" whenever they open their mouths.

The PC crap on ESPN has made it outside actual sporting events unwatchable. What is pathetic is the one can get away with insulting large portions of the population but if that population fits certain criteria ESPN will do nothing. For example, Colin Cowherd making ignorant statements about the South after the Stewart/Ward incident or a guest on an ESPN radio show insulting people of faith. I have not read anything happening to those guys.

What the hell is ESPN doing talking about politics AT ALL?

I guess in a totalitarian communist regime, all entities are enlisted to support The State..

I’ve been weening off the shows I watch. After Stephen A Smith got suspended for basic common sense, I had about enough. Their social agenda the past 2 years has been grating on me, but not enough to quit. Then, they suspended the other guy last week for recounting mistakes he made with a girl in COLLEGE, and got suspended. What the hell was that?

Mike & Mike in the morning is no longer listenable. The hosts keep trying to out-PC each other.

So the leftists at ESPN are now going after each other - oh no, what a shame.

Sports journalists are, if anything, more left wing than journalists who cover actual news.

Their whining is music to my ears.

I listen to ESPN radio all day at work. It’s on in the background. From my experience, Colin was right on the money. What he said wasn’t all that bad, and the qualities he ascribed to Southerners are qualities that Southerners display with pride. It’s just that when a Yankee says it, it’s wrong.

Damn. Good. Question.

Don't forget that Ed Schultz got his start in media reading high school football and hockey scores on the evening news in Fargo, N.D. It was probably the biggest audience he ever had.

I don’t think Cowherd is as wrong as you think. Anyone who’s read up on the real history of NASCAR shows that drivers often “settled things” by other means after the race, and fisticuffs between drivers or even between pit crews of different teams were common (I still remember some 12 years ago when Tony Stewart ran into Kasey Kahne during a race restart and before we knew it, a fight broke out between Stewart’s pit crew and Kahne’s pit crew).

ESPN slowly morphs into NPR, the don’t raise your voice, don’t show emotion, smugly self-righteous radio network.

You can camouflage appearance, but the combination of ignorance and stupidity is widespread and unfixable.

What? You don’t think telling a woman not to provoke a man isn’t common sense?

The only reason to raise your hands against someone is to defend yourself or another person from violence.

Spare me the "provocation" nonsense. If someone says something you don't like, you either walk away or tell her off.

I miss waking up and having sports highlights with funny comments quickly thrown at me with my morning coffee. Now it’s “The View” featuring Lebron and the Yankees.
