I heard George Takei interviewed on NPR the other day (yeah, I listen to NPR all the time now, but fox news is back on Sirius so that might change).

He told a story about getting cast in “The Green Berets” on how he told John Wayne: you might not want to hire me, because you know I don’t agree with your politics and I’m very against the war.

And John Wayne told him: We’re both Americans and entitled to our opinions, I just want the best actor for the part.

So, I was glad to hear him tell that story, because some people would cut their throats first, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

She is now 47.

Katherine Hepburn loved him when they made the equal to “True Grit”.

Their political ideology melted when confronted by the power of The Duke.

I can tell you're from down south
The way you say you-all
You look at me over your shoulder
Just like - - Lauren Bacall

Oh baby, (baby, baby)
You hit the nail right on the head

Listen to this cut from The Amazing Rhythm Aces' first album Stacked Deck from 1973

(Other verses - not Bacall specific. but it's a great lyric nonetheless)

To explain the time gap, Bogart was born in 1899, and was 45 when he met her at the age of 19. They were married she was 20 years old.

She was still working, mostly voice acting for the last decade or so, and was in the English version of the Studio Ghibli hit Howl’s Moving Castle (2004).

To Have and Have Not - 1944
Slim: You know you don’t have to act with me, Steve. You don’t have to say anything, and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow.

Her quotes:
A woman isn’t complete without a man. But where do you find a man - a real man - these days?

I am not a has-been. I am a will be.

I did not know that. I was quoting from Humphrey Bogart’s will. I always thought that “Betty Bogart” sounded funny, like a character from Zippy The Pinhead or something.

May she rest in peace and receive salvation.

RIP, Slim. I didn’t agree with her politics but I’ll always love her classic movies where her politics never came up on screen(at least in the films I saw).
