Dan is the recently retired chief of Police of a small town nearby. We played recreation basketball together at least once a week for many years, until he was recently diagnosed with ALS. Prayers couldn't hurt.
He asked my opinion of lyrics he wrote, and if I could help put them to a tune. It is aptly named "A Country Song". Here goes!
I'm sittin' right here, drinkin' my beer,
thinkin' 'bout my one-legged Wanda,
How she stole my heart and my pickup truck
and left me with her Honda
Ya see I met her on the dance floor, she was dancin' kinda funny,
We drank, we laughed, it wasn't long
until she was my honey.
She moved into my double-wide, our life was goin' fine,
Who would guess an amputee could steal this heart of mine?
(Chorus) Oh Wanda it don't have to be; oh Wanda, I'm beggin' you please,
oh Wanda, just hop on back to me!
One night I had my buddies over for poker and some whiskey,
Low on cash I bet her leg, not thinkin' it too risky;
My foolish gamble cost me, I guess it was my fate
'cause my trailer's been so empty since that full house beat my straight!
Oh Wanda it don't have to be; oh Wanda, I'm beggin' you please,
oh Wanda, just hop on back to me!
I lost my job at WalMart since she left me by myself
I only leave the trailer when no booze is on the shelf,
Good fortune isn't somethin' that usually comes my way,
Please come back dear Wanda, and bring my Chevrolet...
But if you don't be careful with that shotgun in the rack
and check beneath the driver's seat for half a bottle of Jack!
Oh Wanda it don't have to be; oh Wanda, I'm beggin' you please,
oh Wanda, just hop on back to me!
Oh, it only took one leg for you to kick my dream apart
And it would only take one leg for you to hop back to my heart!
My foolish gamble cost me, I guess it was my fate
'cause my trailer's been so empty since that full house beat my straight!
Oh Wanda it don't have to be; oh Wanda, I'm beggin' you please,
oh Wanda, just hop on back to me!
Pinging Slings and Arrows...
LOL
I think you’ve got a hit there, if you can get an uncomplicated tune. Maybe the 3 CW chords with a little pickin’ like Sierra Hull, hehe.
Prayers up for your friend. He should keep writin’ more songs. Someone will put a few tunes to them.
Would work well with and old-style country or bluegrass beat. When he records it, a banjo must be involved. Seriesly.
