Passerby Struck by Car Amid Comic-Con ‘ZombieWalk’
NBC San Diego ^ | Saturday, Jul 26, 2014 | Monica Garske

The victim was not part of the ZombieWalk, according to event organizers

A passerby was hit by a car Saturday evening while the annual Comic-Con ZombieWalk took over downtown San Diego, the San Diego Police Department confirmed.

The incident happened at 2nd and Island avenues just after 5:30 p.m.

Police said a deaf family with small children in the car was stopped at an intersection, waiting for participants of the ZombieWalk to cross.

After several minutes the 48-year-old father driving the car slowly rolled forward trying to get out of the area.

According to the SDPD, several people from the crowd of zombies allegedly surrounded the car and began punching it. Police said the car windshield was shattered by the crowd. The family was frightened, police said, so the father drove forward again. As he drove, he struck a 64-year-old woman with the side of his car.

The victim – who was not part of the zombie march – fell under the car and sustained a serious arm injury.

The zombie crowd then chased the driver on foot as the family drove toward a police officer down the street, officials said. The driver stopped when he arrived at the location of the police officers. Officials said the victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She’s expected to recover.

The incident remains under investigation.

According to the Twitter page for the SDZombieWalk, participants of the event had nothing to do with the incident. Many tweeted that they were stunned by the turn of events at the walk and wished a speedy recovery to woman injured in the incident.

I avoid like the plague those cursed trails that cross busy streets. Cops just lie in wait for a crosswalk violation by a driver.

I also avoid school zones during school hours whenever possible. They seem to attract cops like flies to...

I’m reminded of a encounter I had with an assclown goth all done up as a vampire....

I said “you know....I might take you seriously and stake your ass just to be on the safe side”

Just got a wide eyed stare as a response.....LMAO

I was there Thursday; Mrs. 40 and I rode the trolley to get there. That area, during Comic-Con, it is a place I would not want to drive. It does not surprise me in the least that pedestrians get hit and even killed. That happened in 2012.

That's actually good to hear.

I’m going there today and was glad to learn about the trolley. Much better than fighting for parking. Can’t wait!

If you’ll be riding the Green line a word of advice. East of Petco Park is the 12th and Imperial station. It’s the first station on the green Line and trains leaving there are far less crowded, you’re guaranteed to get a seat. If you board at Convention Center or Gas Lamp stations you will have a hard time finding a seat. If you’re taking the Blue or Orange Lines use 12th and Imperial station also. Have fun!

I always just figured that anybody in Liberal controlled areas were on a zombie walk. So this shouldn’t have been anything unusual.

I haven’t been to a con in 20 years - guess they ain’t what they used to be. What a gang of morons. Did they think attacking people in their cars would be good, innocent fun?
