NASCAR Is In Big Trouble As Team Values Continue To Shrink

Things are going well for NASCAR's top team, Hendrick Motorsports, which includes some of the sport's top drivers, including Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. But a closer look at the value and profit of the other top teams reveals a sport that is trending in the wrong direction.

According to Forbes.com and its valuations of NASCAR's top nine teams, the current value of Hendrick Motorsports ($348 million) is relatively unchanged since 2010 ($350 million). However, the average team has seen a 31.1% drop in profit since 2010 which has translated into an average team value of $139.7 million, down 16.4% during the same span.

Frankly, the announcing is ridiculous, the interviews are too stupid for words, there are too many cars, and way to many collisions which often determine outcome.

Why would anyone follow a particular driver when it's a crap shoot from the get go?

In my opinion, the France family has ruined racing.

Is bump drafting still allowed?

There's still stock car racing in the US, it's just called the Continental Sports Car series.

Professional sports is far from free markets, but isn’t immune from its rules.

Is that the series where they run sport compacts in the same race as the big boys? I tried watching it a few years back. The announcers dissed the Mustangs constantly while talking up the German scrap metal. The sport compacts kept causing wrecks so most of the race was under a yellow flag. I gave up.

Same series, but the Camaro’s are actually pretty dominant at the moment, depends on the track though.

Good for you.

It’s not the same as it was a decade or two ago, but it’s the cutting edge of technology.

Fastest NASCAR pit stop: 8 seconds

Fastest F1 pit stop: 2.3 seconds

JPM - sheese! He’s my idea of a wuss.

Quit F1 mid-season after he crashed into his teammate.

I have a picture from the 2005 season on the wall. A Mustang leading a Porsche and a BMW through a corner. That was a good year for the Mustang.

boys no longer have a natural draw to being a motorhead.

Concise and backed by fact. You are absolutely correct, knarf. Hell, nowadays kids don't want to get their driver's license at 16. I have a 22 year old cousin who still doesn't have her driver's license. She just doesn't want it.

I'm sure there is some of that, just as there is probably some turn-off of their current audience by trying to pander to a new audience.

Can anyone make this connection?:

  1. NASCAR management = GOPe
  2. NASCAR fan base = conservatives
  3. Audience NASCAR management is courting = open borders lobby

There was a time when F1 cars were much cooler than they are today. The 3-liter era (1966-1982) springs to mind, as well as the late ‘80s/early ‘90s active-everything era.

“You nailed it. I used to have a 1970 Torino with the 429 CJ engine. The car was designed for NASCAR. The 1970 Fords on the track were just like mine, gutted and caged.”

Well, sort of. NASCAR’s cars of that era used the stock bodywork, but tube-framed cars began appearing in NASCAR around the mid-’60s.

The cars are pretty cool now. The science behind the performance is amazing.

True, but I sure do miss the sound of Cosworth DFV’s and Ferrari flat-12’s. Heck, I even sorta miss the sound of the BMW/Megatron turbo four, even though its exhaust sounded like a well-executed fart.

Yeah, but the sport is born of rednecks, played by rednecks, and watched by rednecks, so NASCAR is pretty damned stupid to be going all NAACP and gay-rights on everyone. The lack of interest among blacks in stock-car racing is no reason to call your own fan base a bunch of ignorant racists.

The 3 liters were great, but they were almost hitting 1000hp and had a ton of downforce. I was skeptical of the 2.4L V8's, but man they screamed.

This season as usual is a bit of a mess up with any big rule change but they'll adjust as always. At least they're really hard to drive. :-) It's fun watching them get sideways out of every corner.

Unfortunately Hungary is this weekend is always a snorer of a race. I think they just go there for the prostitutes. At least qualy should be good.
