Beaten and starved, the 7-year-old from Greenville, Pa., was tortured nearly to death by his mother and grandparents until a woman walking her dog by their house saw what looked like a living “human skeleton” and told authorities, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

“He looked like a Holocaust victim,” Mercer County Detective John J. Piatek told the Tribune-Review. “He had been beaten with a belt every time he tried to get food. He had three abscessed teeth and weighed 20 pounds when he was taken to Children's Hospital. The starvation could have killed him. The abscessed teeth could have killed him.”

This is so heartbreaking. Any commentary we all make cannot erase these types of horrors. But, I think if we all start paying a little more attention to our neighbors, we can at least try to spot these situations.

Evidently...and incredibly...similar events can and do go on right next door to us. It is just that civilized people just cannot imagine or understand these horrors.

This has been bothering me all day. There are numerous sources for the story online now. It appears that both the Father and Paternal Grandmother made multiple contacts to child services. Nothing was done.

I did some digging online and found the mother's online username. You have to see the account to see how evil it all is. From here:

What type of mother and grandparents would do this? In the profile, she only speaks of three children. She has four. Her sign on date would of been when the fourth child was one. I am fairly certain this is her based on a myspace account. One account led to another online.
