Two Florida men hired to clean out a vacant house mistook a hanging corpse for a Halloween-style hoax and took it to the dump.
Workers Israel Lopez, 50, and Adam Hines, 30, told authorities they were tidying the house in Spring Hill at the request of the landlord when they came upon the corpse in the garage.
The pair cut it down, believing it to be a mannequin, before hauling it to the local rubbish tip where a landfill worker realised it was a body and called the police.
Both individuals as well as the property owners believed the lifelike mannequin was a distasteful Halloween-like hoax left by the former renters, Hernando County Sheriffs office said in a statement.
They cut the mannequin down, placed it on top of a pile of garbage in the back of the pick-up truck and proceeded to the landfill.
Hernando County Sheriffs officials said on Thursday that 33-year-old former tenant Jeremy Witsoth apparently committed suicide several weeks ago in the property, and that the body was in a state of decomposition similar to mummification.
Jeremy Witsoth probably committed suicide because no one cared about him. Even in death, no one took him seriously.
How truly sad.
Agreed - either nobody noticed that he was missing, or just couldn't be arsed about it. Probably see more of these stories in days to come.
Odds are that he was a highly isolated person. It’s not that nobody cared about him, but if a person keeps himself isolated enough, most people will stop trying to connect.
Seems there would have been a molten pool of putrifaction underneath the corpse, being it’s Florida with heat, humidity and all the other atmospheric phenomena generally considered detrimental to the recently departed. I think it was Lynard Skynard that said “ Ooh, Ooh, that smell”
Just dead weight. ..
Valid points. Depending on how messy the garage was, though, perhaps the signs got lost in the garbage.
Just hanging around?
(Yes, I am going straight to h*ll. No, I will not say hello to anybody’s deceased relatives when I get there.)
Spring Hill often is the end of the line.
Lots and lots of old folks from mostly midwest go there to retire and die.
Other than a really great Philly steak and cheese restaurant it is plastic city.
Not just old Midwesterners, apparently.
(I couldn't think of a snarky comment about the cheesesteaks.)
Odds are you are wrong as the article states “former renters”plural.
There is no indication he was in isolation, there was another person(s) involved and maybe that person placed Mt Witsoth there.
If these two idiots,”Workers Israel Lopez, 50, and Adam Hines, 30” hadn’t trashed a possible crime scene the fuz could have investigated.

I live In Florida you are surly correct, but you forgot there are lots of bugs and critters of all sorts that had a buffet style all you can eat dinner for weeks on end....
What ever pile of fluid was left behind.... Was probably long gone....
Wasn’t the foul stench in the area a hint? The smell of a dead human body is one of the most awful smells in the world (ex-LEO not serial killer...: )
don’t worry. he’ll faithfully vote for many years to come
> (ex-LEO not serial killer...: )
Oh yeah, like they’re mutually exclusive.
Seriesly, the guy was obviously very isolated; maybe he simply didn’t get any visitors until after the smell had died down.

The smell can linger for year’s sometimes. It’s an unmistakeable smell. Think of a dead hog that’s been skinned and hanging for a few days times 3 (hunters know what I’m talking’ about...
Not everyone has encountered the smell before, and thus might not recognize it. Also, depending on the amount and type of garbage in the garage, his may not have been the only obnoxious odor. (Keep in mind that the poor guy was obviously not all there mentally, and he left enough crap behind to warrant at least one dump run.)
Didn’t they notice the smell???
