Hospitals at Increasing Risk of Overheating Due to Climate Change (Yeah, Right)
Telegraph UK ^ | July 9, 2014 06:00 GMT | Emily Gosden

Nine out of ten hospital wards may be at risk of overheating, increasing the dangers for vulnerable patients who are left sweltering in temperatures of more than 26C (78.8F), government advisers have warned.

Poor ventilation, thin walls, low ceilings and big windows that can barely be opened are contributing to temperatures far exceeding acceptable levels during hot weather, according to the Committee on Climate Change.

One fifth of domestic properties could also already be overheating, with flats especially vulnerable, it finds.

The number of people dying prematurely from overheating could triple to 7,000 per year by the 2050s as global warming makes deadly heatwaves of the kind seen in 2003 the norm, unless housing and hospitals are adapted to cope with the heat, the CCC says.

What do you call the logical fallacy where one incorrectly presumes a person’s intent? What makes you think I was using their statements to disprove man-made global warming? What at least 2 of them have, or had, in common with the far left here is their “solution” to the alleged problem of man-made global warming (aka, GoreBull Warming), that being to collapse the American economy.

In Texas, that’s called “balmy”.”

Sometimes we even refer to it as a cold front. Weather forecasters are making a big deal of our local temps not reaching 95 yet this year. All of them are certifiably crazy. It is what it is. They just need to suck it up and move on.

I don’t see where I presumed that was your intent.

I made a generic statement that opinions held by bad people are not therefore proven to be incorrect. Sometimes bad people are right.

My apologies if I came across as snarky. Wasn’t my intent.

Uh I think I would know how the buildings I worked in were designed and operated. I worked on and maintained the actual units. LOL. I'm talking about multi story buildings cooled by Chill Water A/C plants using air handlers. The water is cooled by the chiller or in technical terms heat removed from the water and piped to the air handlers. The air handlers have a large fan of around 100 HP and air blows across the coils. The air comes straight in from the outside. From there it is distributed throughout the rooms. A basic and simple system.

I worked on these systems both in the Navy and after I got out. Believe it or not aircraft carriers use the same basic system. NO return air. Yes the buildings would pressurize but not it's not that much. Duct size, fan capacity determine and regulate that along with a damper on the louvers at the outside intake itself.

At night when things calmed down I could sit in my shop close to the air handlers and near the elevators I could tell you when someone entered the building by hearing the pressure change.

Now some spaces may have return but it would not likely be the patients area. This would likely happen because a specific piece of equipment had it's own cooling unit. Modern facilities may now have return older ones do not. The pressure is enough that if you have to take up a commode to replace the wax ring air will come up from the piping. The air handlers themselves? It took a bit of strength to open the door into the machinery room due to the pressure. We had one-three hundred ton chiller and three air handlers that cooled a six story 200 bed nursing home and other spaces. But I've also seen hospital systems and even a hotels system No return duct. The would take up too much real-estate within the buildings.

IF an owner is smart they will oversize meaning going as far as installing an extra chiller. Back ups are a good idea. Places like Chiller ON Call may have their portable units tied up elsewhere. I worked in a facility where it was undersized slightly. Most of the time it could keep up but some days it was touch and go and I had them closing curtains in patients rooms.

You do not want the windows open for several reasons. Safety is one. And it is called Air Conditioning for a reason. Ozone levels in a city are an issue and cause issues for patients with compromised breathing. You want the air filtered as much as possible and the proper humidity maintained to lessen encouragement of unwanted bacteria etc.

Any maintenance man can walk up to their chiller and make it operate at reduced capacity as if the building were under capacity. The way you'll know if you are cooling too much when using multi chillers is simple. The will be running at low capacity or cycling on low chill water temp.

You may be right, but it seems like most public places I go into in the South feel more like 68F than 78F, LOL.

clarification: The pressure is enough that if you have to take up a commode to replace the wax ring at basement level the air will come up from the piping that commode connected too. Upper floors? No.

LOL - these Alarmists need to make a list of everything unpleasant to humans - and claim them ALL as consequences of global warming. Let's just get all their lies out at the same time.

Don’t global warming scaremongers know hospitals exist in places like Florida? AND even existed BEFORE air conditioning?

Wasn’t it just a few months ago that pensioners in the UK were having a difficult time with electric bills and were riding public transportation all day so they could stay warm?
