Can't go home? Will try.

My next youngest among five brothers died, like our grandfather and father, from combinations of strokes and cancer.

Will be traveling from Texas with wife, son, and grandchildren to place ashes into the New River from the banks of the Virginia family farm. Like we did for our father.

I want grandkids to know from whence they came.

If given due respect, would like to post narrative of the journey here.

We will arrive at Hampton Inn in Dublin, Va late on the 27th. One brother will arrive at same hotel early on 28th. Mom is already staying with Uncle Jack and doesn’t much want to talk about Barry.

Remaining brothers just got hired to new jobs and may not be able to attend. Can’t blame them too much. I’m military retired senior nco with a good pension and a wife still working for the retired CEO of one the largest banks in Texas.

Yeah, if he’s retired, why does my wife go to work every morning. He’s the perfect boss, my wife loves working for him, and maybe we need the money, which we do, as most of us do.

In mapping out the trip, never mind gas stops, was stunned by the cost of hotels. By my calculations, driving with family is still less expensive than flying solo into the nearest airport.

Roberston?

My brothers and I spread our father’s ashes in the Arizona desert as he wished. It all seemed so proper as we watched the wind take them to points unknown. May the memories you have or your brother put a smile on your face.

Robertson?

Msybe twenty years ago when we placed my father’s ashes into the New River, i visited the Pearisburg/Giles County Museum.

Asked what they knew about my family. They knew nothing.

Lesson leaned for this next trip: be polite but don’t talk to volunteers.

Her family grew up on Angels Rest Mountain near Narrows. They moved to town when Celanese opened. My wife graduated from Narrows High in the mid 70’s. We live in Blacksburg.

We go back to do the cemetery thing and see the plethora of cousins. You probably know some of them. My son swears everyone in Giles is kin to each other.

Narrows high. Chances are your wife might know my cousin, Patty Smith. Lost contact with her some time ago.

Narrows high school : Green wave.

Wait . . . when did Giles County close the old Narrows high school and build the new county/regional school?

Just trying to reconcile good memories with poor recollection.

If I manage to do it, will you and your wife be joining us for dinner? Everything about this visit is in flux.

I’ll ask her when she comes out of anesthesia. I never know her schedule but it sounds good. The MacArthur Hotel is open again as far as I know and they have a new bridge over the New River.

I’d enjoy reading it. My ancestors lived in that area along Sinking Creek.

Great idea.

Sorry for your loss. My clan came from Rich Patch, near Covington, I always drive through Rich Patch when crossing that part of the country. It restores my soul.
