Those forms are just used to fill racial quotas, and are in themselves racist and divisive-like I said below-make it two boxes-”Human” and “Other”...
************************************
Quotas were the big thing for HR depts. in the ‘80s-’90s. I had a co-worker friend who told me that he checked the box “Native American” on his application form. He was just a regular Caucasian like me, but met a quota and was given preference under Aff. Action.

That’s where all this PC language is misleading. All of us born in the US are Native Americans, but it doesn’t mean we are American Indians.

If I may add a little to what you correctly stated...

When I was in the Air Force, I deployed to Morón Air Base. Morón de la Frontera is less than 20 miles from Sevilla, which is smack-dab in Andalucia. Puerto Ricans (for one,) are mostly descendants of Andalucians.

PS: Andalucians do NOT consider themselves to be equivalent to Castillians, who are different from the Gallicians, who are very different from the Basques...the folks in Spain are very territorial about that.

I’ve heard people call Old San Juan more Andalusian than Seville itself!

You are right, in aspect manners, customs and culture, PRs are mostly Andalusian, and the “minority” here who are descendants from the Castillians, Basques, Galicians, etc. of Northern Spain are the “blanquitos”.

Amen...God knows how many Castillian, etc friends I made in Colegio de Mayaguez, and they were all “blanquitos”

My friend is a manager in a major US insurance company.

One day, he had to call an Indian guy into his office for an embarrassing conversation. He needed the guy to change his "white" description of himself on some government bean counting form because he was messing up the department's diversity numbers!

He's now in the "Asian" column.

And to confuse the issue further, many if not most families from southern Spain, and most if not all of those who migrated to the Americas, are recently found to be actually Sephardic Jews in origin!

There’s a wave now in Puerto Rico of people reconnecting with their Jewish roots. I found that my four last names (one Andalusian, one Basque, and two Galician), are all actually Sephardic Jew surnames.

Check out Sephardim.com

Thank you very kindly-in light of what archaeologists find on nearly a daily basis that shows how mixed up we have been for millennia, there is no logical reason for anyone to be a racist or a guilt monger-it seems early people were happy to breed, travel, trade and make alliances with anybody of like mind, and trade was likely the biggest motivator for friendly relations-wars were probably fought over resources and property-not how someone looked, but whether they behaved like an ass**** or not.

Most of my ancestors were Basques from the Pyrenees-Basque surnames are common in the SW TExas ranch country where I’m from-Basques were keepers of sheep, goats, etc and the country in the SW is good for that-part of my family still does it. Lighter skin and eyes, red and dark blonde hair are not uncommon, either.

As a Basque (and a white man) you are ineligible to be Hispanic.
Sorry. Try working the Mexican angle. Stay away from the sheep and goats, drop jai alai, and play more baseball.

You can always tell a Basque, but you can't tell him much.

I guess they could make it more confusing and have a box for Indigenous American...

Can’t change several centuries of habitation in the new world-sorry-I still live in the country and will have livestock as soon as I have space-but I do love to play softball. And my ancestors originally came to Mexico from Spain-by the time they decided moving north a bit made sense-in the late 1700’s-they were already interbred with Natives of several tribes, and fellow travelers from other areas of Spain.

Thanks so much, cll. Now, I know. It’s a beautiful place. Kinda scary, though, because of the seismicity there.

MrT5 was a 2nd generation American of French Canadian ancestry-most of his relatives still lived in Quebec. They were the most ethnically snooty people I’ve ever met, but since I’ve never known any French from any other country outside of the US, I have no idea if they were that way because they were Canadians from Quebec or whether it was because they were ethnic French...

I have a Basque surname and that’s almost Hispanic, right?

I went to the Canary Islands in 2010 on a transatlantic cruise that started in Barcelona, went around the Mediterranean for a week, and then traced the migration route to San Juan.

It is beautiful, indeed, but very depressed, after so many years of fascism followed by socialism. Official unemployment is 30 percent, so the real figure should be much higher than that. And it shows. So many Spaniards remain chronically “parados”, their term for unemployed - literally, halted, and yet they still encourage massive immigration from Eastern Europe and North Africa. They hit rock bottom, yet they keep on digging.

It’s the wanton suicide of a former world power. And the same thing will happen here in the U.S. if we don’t halt it real soon.

Many Basques also live in France, in La Cote Basque, in fact. They run the smuggling operations in the Pyrenees. And yes, mon ami, les québecois, they can be quite .... how you say ... snooty? But usually not, if you speak excellent French, are an exceptional hockey player, a rigorous Catholic, and hate all Canadians who are not from your neighborhood in Québec city. Other than that, they get along fine with almost anybody.

How lucky you are! We considered expatriating to Spain (Andalusia, I guess) in the late 80s/ early 90s. The cost of living was pretty good then- a lot of growth.

It’s horrible that their economy is so bad (Portugal also). Italy is bad about accepting immigrants, too. History would call this an invasion & it would be repelled.
Our governments are making a hideous mess. Who are the UN that they can do this to us?

Spaniards are “White”. Many Hispanics claim to be descendants of the Canary Islanders. I’m not sure why.

I've only met IRL one person who claimed descent from the Canary Islands, and to my knowledge he never self-identified as "Hispanic."

Not entirely true. Most Puerto Ricans have African ancestry as well as white ancestry. Most “whites” in Puerto Rico would not be considered white in Europe and the US. As is the case here in Brazil, “white” often means “racially mixed, but fair skinned” rather than based on genetics.
