“...and two types of lettuce.”

I failed at lettuce I wanted and the St. Anne’s lettuce I didn’t want was growing but this morning it looks like hell, mostly flat and the soil is not dry so it’s got water.

I’m fixing that today - will go on net to Baker’s Creek Seed and get the Tom Thumb Lettuce seed greeneyes suggested - it a very small head lettuce.

“Also anxious to hear what you think of the tromboncino squash and how you prepare it.”

I grew one Tromboncino squash late last year and got one squash off it before cold weather set in - that squash was about 15 inches long. I cut it into medium thick slices, put a bit of extra virgin olive oil in skillet, added the squash when skillet was little over medium high, and let it fry until it had brown spots on it, took it out, put bit of salt and pepper on it and ate it. I won’t be boiling any of it - to me that is just mush.

I take it that’s why people don’t can squash—well, that and it’s difficult to assess the pH of the mixture. I love squash bisque but it sounds too dangerous to can.

That is a small dog! Frankie is 20 weeks old in the pic I posted. I think that he weighed 9 pounds at 9 weeks. He will probably weigh about 95 pounds as an adult.

"Chainsaw"? I love it! :)

I have my Sun Gold cherries flowering already and I just got some Stupice starters, a medium-sized tomato, I’m told, which I need to get planted in their containers. And my corn, Mirani White from Park Seed, haven’t spouted yet but it’s only been a few days.

I’d like to do garlic. Do I plant the individual segments of the bulb or the whole bulb?

I am fairly new to gardening, as this will be only my 4th year for vegetables. Not so sure I can count last year, though, because 1) my cat dumped my germinating seeds from the table in my house, and I had no idea what was what; 2) last summer was so stinking hot here that nothing grew but the weeds.

Every victory is a big, big deal for me.

This year: I successfully germinated tomato seeds. One group was a packet of seeds that I bought from Burpee, but the other group is from an heirloom tomato that I bought just to harvest the seeds. I put them in a dark room on an old heating pad for 2 days after seeing the expensive tomato “grow mats” in an online catalog, and they popped right out! I will be planting them tomorrow. Hope my yield is as impressive as the germination rate.

Oh, rightly, it’s very dark now and the wind is blowing, I think the rain is starting.

I got an emergency bulletin that there was a bad storm with hail but that one expired about 30 min ago. Oops, the lights flashed, what is happening at your house right now? It’s raining now.

“Your farm is starting to produce well. You will like the sweet millions...”

rightly, I’ve never in my life grown a tomato, much less from seed. If I manage to actually get tomatoes, it will be one of those mountain top successes. I read how you all eat your homegrown ones, and I’ve never had one.

As I’ve said, my friend in Bandera, think I’ll just call her Bandera from now on, read about the tomato eating you guys do and she sent me an email that her father was a great gardener and he would slice his tomato and put some sugar on top and eat it. I will try that if I get some. Have any of you tried a tomato with some sugar on it?

The ticks are bad here right now. I’ve had 40 or more bites from the vermin this spring.

One of the bites is infected and looks quite nasty. I visited the sawbones today and she didn’t like the looks of it at all, so she put me on an antibiotic for two weeks.

We are getting actual rain, not the misty, wet air stuff, but the kind with raindrops, and lots of them. I hope this is all the it amounts to, no hail or severe wind.

Gotta take a supper break, be back soon if the power is still on.

Conroe weather was specifically talked about just now on national weather station. This storm over us is significant with much lightning activity and I can attest to that.

Glad I got that new rain gauge so I’ll know what fell here once this is over.

If you want a sweet tomato, the little naturesweet brand grape type tomatoes in a clamshell are very sweet, and are good for snacking. They also keep well.

There is also an on the vine tomato, that comes in a sealed plastic bag. They are good for sandwiches.

BTW, patio tomatoes are specially bred to be very compact, and grown in a container..You might could sneak one of those amongst the balcony flowers.

It’s FINALLY warm out today. There’s no freezing temperatures forecast for the month so I’m putting in what I can and if I have to cover them, I have to cover them.

I put in the zucchini seedlings I started and planted the pole beans.

Hopefully the tomatoes can go in sometime between tomorrow and Monday.

We got about 10 minutes of decent rain then it quit. No storm here, one lightening flash after the rain stopped. It was a very thin line of weather, moved through pretty fast.

I went back and backed the radar up and played it and saw you got a patch of orange/red right through your area.

Plant the garlic segments. Flat side down, pointy side up. I usually soak mine for an hour or so in lukewarm water and then peel all the extra stuff off too before I plant.

Being able to watch the history on the radar and back it up and play the loop is really cool. I zoomed into my neighborhood so I could see my intersection and watched it move through.

Ain’t technology great! At times, anyway.

Is it too late for garlic this season?
