His Name is 'Emigration Check Required': Indian's Visa Goof-Up

Sagar Chikane receives visa with 'Emigration Check Required' as part of his name after new Indian passport confuses typist

‘Sagar Ramachandra Emigration Check Required Chikane’ – is a very long name for anyone to have.

Even if the man in question hails from the South of India where a person’s name includes his father’s name and the family name, apart from his own moniker.

However, for this welder from Tamil Nadu in India, who still has to travel to the UAE - before June 2014 - according to his visa, his emigration status has been ‘officially’ incorporated into his name.

Not by Chikane himself, but by a typing clerk involved in the visa process. Chikane spotted the mistake and has currently requested that the UAE Ministry of Interior to correct his name on the visa.

‘Emigration Clearance Required’ is a section in Indian passports where depending on one’s educational status and employment offer, one can get a permanent exemption stamped on the passport.

If not, then every time the passport holder travels, he needs to get the necessary emigration clearance.

New-look passports

Part of the confusion may stem from the fact that new Indian passports issued by the government have changed the positioning of ‘Emigration Clearance Required’ column.

In Chikane’s case, who had a new passport, the concerned typist seems to have added ‘Emigration Clearance Required’ as the name of the passport holder’s father.

Earlier the Emigration Check Required column used to be on the second page of the passport.

In the new format, the column is printed along with other family details on the last page of the passport. This might cause confusion among typists working in the UAE.

Ambassador alerted

Indian Ambassador to the UAE, TP Seetharam has been informed about the confusion this is causing, according to embassy sources.

“The problem will be if somebody lands in the UAE on a Thursday. Such passengers may be stranded here for three days because emigration offices are closed,” said the source.

Not surprising, considering that Tamils are one of the Indian minority groups who are oppressed by the government there.

LOL! A shipmate of mine, from Long Island, is named Raccamandato. Her great-great grandfather came to Ellis Island as a young man and the immigration clerk stamped over his name the word “Recommended,” meaning, he could come into the U.S. He saw that on his name and thought they changed it since he was a new immigrant so he became the Italian word for “recommended.”

LOL. You have crawled out of the gutter to post anti-India statements again. Tamil Nadu is the seventh most populous state in India - there are about 75 million Tamils in one of the most developed states in India. - and you still call it a minority?

Perhaps you refer to Sri Lanka, where the Tamil minority is being hounded by the Gov't.

The FACT is that the Indian regime has extrajudicially killed tens of thousands of Tamils. There is an independence movement in Tamil Nadu (one of 17 throughout India.) The Tamils have been treated brutally.

No matter how many people they kill, kidnap, torture, or otherwise abuse, you’ll sit here and defend this brutal, corrupt regime. Are you an agent of teh regime?

I wonder what you mean by "here" . I am in India. Unlike you, I don't need payoffs from terrorist regimes to put food on the table. Tamil Nadu is one of the most industrialised states. NO ONE in Tamil Nadu has been treated brutally. But then you just have to parrot your Paki paymasters' propaganda to get paid. Are you paid by the word? I pity you.

You don't even know that Sri Lanka is a different country. Where the Tamils are being hounded. Or maybe you just don't care.

You keep making that charge, which you know very well is false.

To claim that “NO ONE in Tamil Nadu has been treated brutally” is simply a denial of the facts. As I noted, tens of thousands of them have been extrajudicially murdered. But that’s apparently OK with you and your paymasters. In your Hindutva world, that doesn’t count as being treated brutally.

Tamils are not being treated well in Sri Lanka or in India. That is why they seek independence, so they can run their own affairs without being subjected to brutality. Apparently, you oppose that aspiration.

I know Tamil Nadu is as free as freedom gets in India. Because I spend more than a week every month in Tamil Nadu, in the semi-urban and rural areas and occasionally in the big cities, as part of my work. The only extra-judicial murders are in your mind. I don't subscribe to Hindutva. Actually I worship at a Jain temple. Not that there is much wrong with Hindutva.

And no - Tamils do not seek independence from India - maybe only in your ISI paymasters' mind.
