Rise of the robots: Humans will compete with droids for jobs by 2040, study claims
UK Daily Mail ^ | April 21, 2014 | Ellie Zolfagharifard

By 2040, cabs will be driven by Google robots, shops will become showrooms for online outlets and call centres will be staffed by intelligent droids. That’s the scenario depicted in recent research which suggests robots could be taking over our lives and jobs in less than 30 years. The competition for work caused by a rise in the robots population will see us heading to surgeons for ‘additional processing power for our brains’, they claim. We may also be requesting bionic implants for our hands that will make us able to perform tasks as fast as any machine.

“call centres will be staffed by intelligent droids”

quite a bit wrong with this idea.
And quite a bit wrong with someone who doesn’t see what is wrong with this idea.

Why would AI call center staff need to be mobile?

If they are going to be made of metal, then they will be stolen and "recycled."

And that goes for there tracking components, too.

“This is shy there will be a “guaranteed wage”.”

This is why there will be massive unemployment.

Honestly, I think a more likely scenario is that the victory of Progressivism over freedom will result in the collapse of Western civilization, which of course will include the general failure of the power grids.

So I think in 30-40 years, people will be living in the stone age, only much dirtier and more violent.

By 2040, cabs will be driven by Google robots, shops will become showrooms for online outlets and call centres will be staffed by intelligent droids.

This guy read too much science fiction as a child or saw too many cheesy sci-fi movies and TV shows. For instance, cabs will eventually be automated but not actually driven by robots. That's silly.

Far more likely, the NYC of 2040 will have fleets of driverless taxicabs that are controlled by software (Google will likely play a major role) and monitored in a central "dispatch" location. I envision it working something like this:

You are winding up a business meeting on Park Avenue and you have dinner at a restaurant over in the Village. With the push of a button on your mobile device, a "cab" is dispatched to be waiting for you in front of the building in 10 minutes. The cab will be flashing your name on the side of it so that you know which one is yours.

The route to your restaurant in Greenwich Village is already mapped out. You slip into the cab and your identity (and billing info) is confirmed via Bluetooth and the cab pulls away from the curb. It has no issues entering the traffic flow because the other vehicles (also remotely controlled) are made aware of the fact and anticipate your cab pulling into the travel lane - so they slow down (and no horns are sounded!). You see, every vehicle in Manhattan is remotely controlled. Manhattan is the first of many formerly grid-locked urban areas in which human-controlled vehicles are forbidden. Therefore, traffic jams are now a thing of the past as all vehicle movement is synchronized. There will be a "command center" - probably in some NYC suburb like White Plains or Uniondale - that will be staffed by humans. They will have access to the many thousands of street cameras that will show every inch of the Manhattan streets in real time and will be able to immediately zoom in on problem areas. Yet software will actually control and coordinate the movement of all Manhattan traffic. Traffic lights will no longer be necessary (but pedestrian crossing lights will remain).

In precisely 6 minutes and 42 seconds, you are whisked from Park Avenue to your Greenwich Village restaurant. The cabfare is $32.34 (no tipping) that is electronically debited to your credit card. The owner of the cab company you used is kicking back in the Carribean and watching the profits roll in - a 45% profit margin in an industry that has virtually no human resources.

Welcome to the future and it will look nothing like the silly robot below.
