Posted on 04/19/2014 2:50:51 PM PDT by SunkenCiv

A German submarine sank to its watery grave somewhere off the coast of South America in 1943. This is the exact moment it's discovered.

Secrets of the Third Reich: The Ghost of U-513

The pride of the wolfpacks, German sub U-513, became a tomb for all but seven of her crew after being bombed by a U.S. patrol plane in 1943. The U-boat then vanished off the South American coast, where it was lost for more than 68 years. Now, witness the ghost ship's story through rare archival footage and interviews with U-boat vets, and follow the Brazilian entrepreneur who set out to uncover her buried secrets.

Modern history, but it's nautical, and it's been a light week.

A lot of the later subs escaping from Germany towards the end of the war had treasures on them. They were taking to the a secret hide out so the 3rd Reicht could rebuild & it’s leaders could live out their lives in leisure.

Whoa, no wonder nobody could find it! I mean, who’s gonna look for a submarine on a beach?

Someone should remind the Smithsonian that a Submarine is a boat, not a ship.

That boat on the beach has “U995” painted on the bow.

Sooo...not only did they hide it on a beach but they changed the hull number too? Them Nazis were a sneaky bunch... ;-)

No, that looks to be a picture of a sub of the same class of the missing sub with the Brazilian entrepeneur in front of it. The sub in the photo is part of the German submariners memorial in Kiel, Germany. It commemorates those lost in subs in WW I and WWII. I’ve got a picture of myself in front of that sub when I was on vacation as a teenager. The entreprenuer was likely doing research on the one he was looking for.

recovered sunken vessel (ship or boat) is not a "ghost ship"

Well, a U-Boat is clearly not a ship.

What would preclude an underwater capable vessel of some size from being a ship?

Just looked it up. It’s the Laboe Sailors memorial. which commemorates the sailors lost in all navies during the world wars. Adjacent to Kiel harbor.

If you send some stuff from point A to point B and it travels on a boat, how can you claim it was shipped?

At least he knew which one he was looking for. I remember a show about a sub that had been found off the coast of New Jersey that they couldn’t identify for some time. In the meantime, they referred to it as “U-?” or “U-Who?”

It ended up being the U-869 which had been thought lost off Africa.

“Ghost Boat” doesn’t have the same ring to it... But you’re right, a submarine is by tradition called “boat”.
