American public school students sick of the smaller portions and healthier offerings they get at lunch thanks to Michelle Obama's anti-obesity initiatives are sounding off on social media. Just a month after school lunch participation saw the steepest drop on record following the implementation of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, students tired of going home hungry are making sure the first lady knows why. 'I'll never forgive Michelle Obama for this school lunch,' tweeted one angry student.

I purpose a new law. The white house must serve the same meals they mandate on others.

Why do you think Barry makes a Five Guys run as soon as Moochie is out of sight?

I liked my square pizza and fries from that era too.

As long as Reggie is one of them, no doubt. I couldn’t resist.

***On one hand I want to smack these little spoiled kids and revert back to my upbringing***

Back in my school days (1952-1964) all the school lunches were great except one.

The best was Denver CO. The worst was Aztec NM, and I mean really, really bad, so bad I started taking my lunch. It seemed every lunch consisted of a poor quality mac and “cheese”(?) and kids were constantly throwing that slop back up on their trays. And to think, 35 miles west of there at Kirtland Schools their lunches were great!

Everywhere else the lunches were also good. We only went home for lunch when we lived within a few hundred yards of the school.

I remember when our school served Pizza the first time. Most of the kids had no idea what it was and tossed it. It was really good for us that ate our pizza.

You’re probably right but I was hoping the lesson would be something about separation of powers in the constitution and why the we fought a revolutionary war against the king.

From K-8 we had sack lunches we brought from home, ate at our desks, school furnished a half pint of whole milk for 15 cents a day. Then we went out to the playground for 45 mins. Gym if weather was bad.

HS I still carried that bologna sandwich, and bought milk and chips 25cents. Another 50 cents for the bus ride, no school buses back then. I went to a Vo/Tech HS. The regular HS closer to home, but still to far to walk, did not teach what I wanted to learn.

we had three, count ‘e THREE recesses and ran around like maniacs

one at 10 am, one at lunch and one at 1:30

no fat kids, or very few

Again, back in my day, if a student did not like the school lunch, they would go across the street to the malt shop and get a hot dog or hamburger, soda or malt and ice cream, IF they had the money. Some kids had credit privileges and could sign for their food and daddy would later pay. No one was forced to eat in the cafeteria.

Today, with “Closed Campus” rules, the local malt shops near schools have closed down.

Not long ago, a neighbor woman sent her Kindergarden student to school with a home packed lunch. The school confiscated it and forced the kid to eat the government mandated slop.
It seemed that the more kids forced to eat the slop, the more money the school got from the government, to serve more slop.

***What’s wrong with Tang? It’s yummy. ;-)***

I used to buy it at the military commissary(1968). it came in a large glass container with a pointed lid. I still have those decorative jars after 45 years.

Today I notice it comes in a very small plastic container, collects moisture and hardens up real fast.

**I had enough trouble on an Air Force base to eat lunch with $6.**

I did well on “Separate Rations” while in the USAF. The local base bowling alley had the best burgers and a Pepsi, although I preferred Coke.

I agree with you on Aztec. My grandaughter was at Aztec HS last year, she is a type 1 diabetic since 9 yrs old. The carbs in the Aztec school lunches are uncalculatable. She was either so high (400-500) she was close to DKA after school or her blood sugars crashed an hour after lunch when the health aide (not nurse) gave her way too much insulin for the meal. I finally instructed her to call me when she got her lunch, describe it and we would calculate her shot and she would sneak taking it because the school required her to have the health office calculate and draw the shot. The health office never even noticed she stopped coming before lunch. We eventually packed her a lunch that we knew the carb count of and she knew what insulin was required for the food. Gave up on school food entirely.

***It seems most people would rather complain and demand than help to solve the problem.***

Back in my senior year(1963-1964), the students with money decided to boycott the cafeteria because “they” said the meals were bad. I did not go along because I knew the meals were really good.

***I agree with you on Aztec.**

Of the three schools there in the 1950s, Kirtland lunches were very good.

Farmington had so many kids we only went half a day so we got our lunch at home when we were dismissed for the day.

Aztec, beyond awful! So bad it is still burned in my memory after 58 years! Amazing.
